🔧 HR-V - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with the correct oil. This keeps your engine lubricated and helps prevent wear and sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool 15-30 minutes; oil can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Always support the HR-V with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off belts and exhaust components; wipe spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (7-quart minimum)
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • 10mm socket
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Oil filter wrench (65mm, 14-flute) (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (SAE 0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 4 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off to help oil drain faster.
  • 🧰 Park on level ground and apply the parking brake.
  • 🧰 If you lift the front, place wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
  • 🧰 Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap (helps draining).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and safely support the front

  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front at the approved front center jack point.
  • Set the HR-V down onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) placed at the front pinch welds.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.

Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the splash shield bolts.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver and trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic push-clips.
  • Trim clip tool prevents breaking the clips.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Position the drain pan (7-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 17mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug, then finish removing it by hand.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.

Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer

  • Remove the old washer from the drain plug and install the new oil drain plug crush washer.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
  • Use a torque wrench with a 17mm socket and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan (7-quart minimum) under the oil filter area (more oil will spill).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (65mm, 14-flute) (specialty) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with the old filter (it should not stick to the engine).

Step 6: Install the new oil filter

  • Use a clean finger with a bit of new oil to lightly coat the new filter’s rubber gasket.
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the engine surface.
  • Tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn after gasket contact.
  • Use shop towels to wipe any oil off the filter area.

Step 7: Reinstall the splash shield

  • Reinstall clips and bolts using the trim clip removal tool, Phillips screwdriver, and 10mm socket.
  • Confirm the shield is secure and not rubbing on anything.

Step 8: Refill engine oil

  • Place a funnel in the oil fill hole.
  • Pour in SAE 0W-20 full synthetic, starting with about 3.5 quarts.
  • Reinstall the oil filler cap.

Step 9: Start, check for leaks, and set the oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 3 minutes.
  • Use a shop towel, pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert, then check the level.
  • Top off as needed to reach the upper mark (typical total is about 3.7 quarts with filter).
  • Look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.

Step 10: Reset the oil life / Maintenance Minder

  • Path A (Display Audio): Use the screen: Home > Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance Info > Reset.
  • Path B (i-MID/steering wheel buttons): Use the steering wheel controls to open Maintenance, select Oil Life, then press and hold Enter/Reset to confirm.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Recheck the oil level after a short 5-10 minute drive.
  • ✅ Confirm the oil life shows 100% (or the reminder is cleared).
  • ✅ Pour used oil into a sealed container and take it (and the old filter) to an oil recycling location.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
