🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Change
Changing the oil and filter on your XC90 keeps the turbo/supercharged engine lubricated and helps protect the timing and valve-train components. This is a straightforward service if you can safely lift the vehicle and keep the oil level within spec.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot oil and exhaust parts.
- Use jack stands on a level surface; never rely on the jack alone.
- The engine oil can be very hot if the vehicle was recently driven.
- Keep dirt away from the oil filter housing and filler opening.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool fully before opening the oil system.
- If your XC90 has an oil life reminder, note the current service interval before resetting it.
- Gather all parts first so the oil filter housing does not sit open.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle at the approved lift points.
- Place the vehicle on jack stands and chock the rear wheels.
- Make sure the vehicle is stable before going underneath.
Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield
- Use the 3/8-inch ratchet with the correct fastener tool for the shield fasteners if equipped.
- Remove the lower engine cover or splash shield to access the drain plug and oil filter area.
- Set all fasteners aside in order.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use the 17mm socket to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain completely. This can take several minutes.
- Install a new drain plug washer on the plug.
- Reinstall the drain plug and tighten to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the oil filter housing.
- Use the 36mm oil filter cap socket to loosen the filter housing cap.
- Remove the cap and old filter cartridge together.
- Use the oil filter drain tool (specialty) if needed to keep oil from spilling during removal.
Step 5: Replace the filter element and seals
- Pull the old filter cartridge off the cap.
- Remove the old O-rings from the cap carefully.
- Install the new O-rings from the oil filter housing O-ring set.
- Lightly oil the new O-rings with clean engine oil.
- Install the new filter cartridge on the cap.
- Lightly oiling the seals helps prevent tearing.
Step 6: Install the new filter
- Thread the filter housing cap back in by hand first.
- Use the 36mm oil filter cap socket and torque wrench to tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the plastic filter housing cap.
Step 7: Refill the engine with oil
- Lower the vehicle enough to access the oil filler if needed, or refill from the top with a funnel.
- Add about 6.0 quarts first, then top off gradually.
- Use only 0W-20 synthetic oil that meets Volvo specification.
- Do not overfill.
Step 8: Check the oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Shut it off and wait a few minutes for the oil to settle.
- Check the level using the vehicle’s electronic oil level display.
- Top off in small amounts until the level reaches the correct range.
Step 9: Reinstall the splash shield
- Use the 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the lower engine cover.
- Make sure all fasteners are secured.
- Lower the vehicle from the jack stands.
Step 10: Reset the service reminder
- On the center display, go to Vehicle > Status > Service if the reminder is shown there.
- Complete the oil change reminder reset as prompted on the screen.
- If your display wording differs, use the vehicle’s service reminder reset menu before driving.
✅ After Repair
- Check under the vehicle for leaks around the drain plug and filter housing.
- Recheck the oil level after a short drive and after the engine sits for a few minutes.
- Make sure the service reminder is cleared.
- Dispose of used oil and filter at a proper recycling center.
