🔧 Tahoe - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with the correct fresh oil. This keeps your 5.3L properly lubricated and helps prevent engine wear and sludge.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

Assumption: stock 5.3L uses 0W-20 dexos oil, ~8 qt with filter.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the exhaust cool slightly; parts can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Support the Tahoe with jack stands if lifted; never rely on a jack.
  • ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses; hot oil can splash.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off belts and hoses; wipe spills immediately.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension (6")
  • 15mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs range)
  • Oil filter wrench (65mm 14-flute) (specialty)
  • Flat trim clip tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic, dexos1 approved) - Qty: 8 quarts
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off (warm oil drains faster).
  • If you need more room, raise the front with a floor jack and set it on jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the oil drain and filter

  • Slide the drain pan under the oil pan area.
  • If a lower splash shield is in the way, remove the fasteners using a 10mm socket and release any push-clips with a flat trim clip tool.
  • Tip: Lay fasteners in a row to remember locations.

Step 2: Drain the old engine oil

  • Remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine by hand (this helps it drain smoothly).
  • Use a 15mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug, then finish unscrewing by hand.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).

Step 3: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Wipe the drain plug and the sealing surface with shop rags.
  • Install a new oil drain plug gasket if your plug uses one.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading (damaging the threads).
  • Tighten using a torque wrench and 15mm socket: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the old oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter area (the filter will spill oil when removed).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (65mm 14-flute) (specialty) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with the filter (a stuck gasket can cause a major leak).

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Put a thin film of fresh oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket (this helps it seal and come off next time).
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
  • If you must use a torque wrench with the filter wrench: Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Reinstall the splash shield (if removed)

  • Reposition the shield and start all fasteners by hand.
  • Tighten using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet (snug only; don’t strip plastic).

Step 7: Refill with fresh oil

  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill hole.
  • Pour in 8 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic dexos.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.

Step 8: Start, check for leaks, and verify the oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter using safety glasses.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
  • Check the dipstick, wipe with a shop rag, reinsert, and recheck. Top off if needed.

Step 9: Reset the oil life monitor

  • Turn ignition to ON (engine off).
  • Use the steering wheel controls to navigate the Driver Information Center to the oil life screen.
  • Press and hold SET/CLR until it resets to 100%.

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck for leaks after your first short drive.
  • Confirm the dipstick level is within the crosshatch/safe range.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling drop-off (most parts stores accept it).
  • Wipe any spilled oil off the skid shield and frame with shop rags.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $45-$85 (parts only)

You Save: $75-$115 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.7-1.0 hours.
