🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Replacement
This service replaces the old engine oil and the cartridge-style oil filter with fresh fluid and a new filter. Doing both together helps protect the turbocharged engine and keeps oil pressure and lubrication where they should be.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a cool engine. Hot oil and exhaust parts can burn you.
- Support the vehicle with jack stands before getting underneath it. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Use eye protection. Oil may drip when the drain plug and filter are removed.
- Keep the ignition off the whole time.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a proper recycling location.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool fully before draining the oil.
- Raise the front of the car and support it securely on jack stands.
- Keep a drain pan ready before removing the drain plug.
- Tip: Warm oil drains faster, but a cool engine is safer.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to raise the front of your Passat from the proper lift point.
- Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the car onto them.
- Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels so the car cannot roll.
Step 2: Remove the lower engine cover
- Use the 3/8-inch ratchet and the correct fastener bits or sockets on the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Set the cover and hardware aside in order so reinstalling it is easier.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Position the oil drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use the 19mm socket to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain completely.
- Install a new drain plug crush washer.
- Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the oil filter
- Open the hood and locate the oil filter housing on top of the engine.
- Use the 32mm oil filter socket and ratchet to loosen the filter cap.
- Lift out the old filter cartridge and remove the old O-rings from the cap.
- Wipe the housing clean with shop towels.
- Install the new O-rings from the kit and lightly coat them with fresh oil.
- Install the new filter cartridge into the cap.
- Reinstall the cap and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Tip: Do not over-tighten the plastic filter cap.
Step 5: Add new engine oil
- Lower the car back to level ground.
- Use the funnel to add about 5.5 quarts of new engine oil first.
- Wait a minute, then check the dipstick or electronic oil level if equipped.
- Add oil slowly until the level is correct, staying near the full mark without overfilling.
Step 6: Start and inspect
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Check under the car and around the filter housing for leaks.
- Shut the engine off and recheck the oil level after a few minutes.
✅ After Repair
- Verify the oil level is correct once the engine has sat for a few minutes.
- Inspect for any oil seepage around the drain plug and filter cap.
- Reset the service reminder in the instrument cluster if it is due.
- Drive a short distance, then recheck for leaks one more time.
