On your Silverado, the engine oil and oil filter are changed from underneath the truck. You’ll drain the old oil, replace the filter, then refill with the correct amount of oil and reset the oil life monitor.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground.
- Let the engine cool for at least 30 minutes.
- Have the new filter and oil ready before draining.
- Use a drain pan large enough to catch all old oil.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the truck
- Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front if needed for access.
- Place the truck on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
Step 2: Remove the drain plug
- Position the drain pan under the oil pan.
- Use a 15mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain completely.
- Install a new drain plug gasket if the old one is crushed or damaged.
- Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 3: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the filter area.
- Use an oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old filter.
- Check that the old filter gasket came off with the filter.
Step 4: Install the new oil filter
- Lightly coat the new filter gasket with clean engine oil.
- Spin the new oil filter on by hand until the gasket touches.
- Tighten the filter by hand another 3/4 turn.
- Do not use a wrench to tighten the new filter.
Step 5: Add new engine oil
- Lower the truck if needed so it sits level.
- Remove the oil fill cap and use a funnel to add about 7.5 quarts of engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic).
- Wait a minute, then check the dipstick and top off as needed.
- Total capacity is about 8 quarts with filter.
Step 6: Check for leaks
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
- Inspect the drain plug and filter for leaks.
- Shut the engine off and recheck the oil level after a few minutes.
Step 7: Reset the oil life monitor
- Use the steering wheel controls to open the Driver Information Center.
- Go to Vehicle Information > Oil Life.
- Press and hold the checkmark or set/reset button until it resets to 100%.
- Reset only after the oil change is finished.

- Check the oil level again after your first drive.
- Look under the truck for any new leaks.
- Verify the oil life monitor shows 100%.
- Recheck the dipstick level on level ground.
