- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool for at least 20-30 minutes.
- Have the new filter and oil ready before draining.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the front of the truck
- Use a floor jack to lift the front enough to work safely.
- Place jack stands under the proper front frame points.
- Lower the truck onto the stands and check stability.
- Give the truck a gentle shake.
Step 2: Remove the oil fill cap
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap by hand.
- This helps the oil drain faster.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 15mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain fully.
- Inspect the drain plug and replace the washer if needed.
- Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the filter area.
- Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the filter.
- Spin the filter off by hand once it breaks loose.
- Be ready for oil to spill from the filter.
Step 5: Install the new oil filter
- Wipe the filter mounting surface clean with a shop rag.
- Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil.
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches.
- Then tighten it about 3/4 turn more by hand.
- Do not overtighten the filter.
Step 6: Refill the engine with oil
- Place a funnel in the oil fill hole.
- Add about 5.5 quarts of the correct oil first.
- Install the oil fill cap.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
Step 7: Check for leaks and set final oil level
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
- Check under the truck for leaks at the drain plug and filter.
- Check the dipstick and top off oil as needed.
- Final capacity is usually about 6 quarts with filter.
Step 8: Reset the oil life monitor
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the Driver Information Center controls to find Oil Life.
- Press and hold the reset button until oil life returns to 100%.
- Reset only after the service is complete.
