🔧 Engine Oil and Oil Filter - Replacement

Your Silverado needs a drain, filter change, and refill with the correct oil spec. This service helps protect the engine, keep oil pressure stable, and remove contaminants that build up over time.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Engine oil can be very hot. Let the engine cool before starting.
  • Use jack stands anytime the truck is raised. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • Keep oil off belts, hoses, and the exhaust.
  • Dispose of used oil and filter properly. Do not pour oil on the ground.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 15mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop rags
  • Torque wrench

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic dexos1 Gen 2) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground.
  • Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool for at least 20-30 minutes.
  • Have the new filter and oil ready before draining.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front of the truck

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front enough to work safely.
  • Place jack stands under the proper front frame points.
  • Lower the truck onto the stands and check stability.
  • Give the truck a gentle shake.

Step 2: Remove the oil fill cap

  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap by hand.
  • This helps the oil drain faster.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 15mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain fully.
  • Inspect the drain plug and replace the washer if needed.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the filter area.
  • Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the filter.
  • Spin the filter off by hand once it breaks loose.
  • Be ready for oil to spill from the filter.

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Wipe the filter mounting surface clean with a shop rag.
  • Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil.
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches.
  • Then tighten it about 3/4 turn more by hand.
  • Do not overtighten the filter.

Step 6: Refill the engine with oil

  • Place a funnel in the oil fill hole.
  • Add about 5.5 quarts of the correct oil first.
  • Install the oil fill cap.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.

Step 7: Check for leaks and set final oil level

  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
  • Check under the truck for leaks at the drain plug and filter.
  • Check the dipstick and top off oil as needed.
  • Final capacity is usually about 6 quarts with filter.

Step 8: Reset the oil life monitor

  • Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the Driver Information Center controls to find Oil Life.
  • Press and hold the reset button until oil life returns to 100%.
  • Reset only after the service is complete.

✅ After Repair

  • Check the oil level again after your first drive.
  • Look for drips under the truck after parking.
  • Recheck the drain plug and filter area if you see any oil.
