🔧 Sequoia - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

Changing the oil and filter on your Sequoia keeps the 5.7L V8 protected from wear and helps it run clean and cool. This is a straightforward service, but the oil filter is a cartridge style, so you’ll need the correct cap tool and a new O-ring.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and set the parking brake before lifting the vehicle.
  • Engine oil and exhaust parts can be hot. Let the engine cool first.
  • Support the vehicle with jack stands if you need access underneath. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • Use care around the oil filter housing; it may hold hot oil.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for vehicle weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan
  • 14mm socket
  • Oil filter cap wrench 64mm 14-flute
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 8 quarts
  • Oil filter cartridge - Qty: 1
  • Oil filter housing O-ring kit - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool so the oil drains safely.
  • Have the new filter, O-ring, and drain washer ready before you start.
  • Keep the old filter out of the way.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the Sequoia if you need more access to the drain plug and filter.
  • Place jack stands under the proper support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.

Step 2: Remove the drain plug

  • Place the drain pan under the oil pan.
  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain fully, then install a new drain plug crush washer.
  • Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Remove the oil filter housing

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter housing.
  • Use the oil filter cap wrench 64mm 14-flute to loosen and remove the housing cap.
  • Remove the old cartridge filter from the cap and discard it.
  • Remove the old O-ring from the cap. A plastic pick can help if needed.
  • Install the new oil filter housing O-ring kit and lightly coat the O-ring with clean engine oil.
  • Install the new oil filter cartridge onto the cap.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Once dripping slows to a few drops, reinstall the drain plug by hand first.
  • Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten it.
  • Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Fill with fresh oil

  • Lower the vehicle if needed and open the oil fill cap on the engine.
  • Use a funnel to add about 7.5 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic first.
  • Install the cap, start the engine, and let it idle 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off, wait a few minutes, then check the dipstick.
  • Add oil slowly until the level reaches the full mark. Total capacity is about 7.9 quarts with filter.
  • Do not overfill.

Step 6: Check for leaks

  • Look under the Sequoia for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter housing.
  • Recheck the oil level after the engine sits a few minutes.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and verify the oil pressure warning light goes out quickly.
  • Inspect again for leaks after a short test drive.
  • Reset the maintenance reminder if your dash display still shows service due.
  • Dispose of used oil and filter properly at a recycling center.
