🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Oil Change

Changing the engine oil and oil filter on your Yaris keeps the engine lubricated, cool, and clean. This service removes old oil, replaces the filter, and refills the engine with the correct fresh oil.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot oil and exhaust parts.
  • Chock the rear wheels and set the parking brake before lifting the front of the vehicle.
  • Use jack stands, not just a floor jack, to support the vehicle.
  • Oil will be slippery; clean spills right away to prevent falls.
  • Do not overtighten the drain plug or oil filter. Stripped threads can be expensive to repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • 14mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Torque wrench
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 4.2 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool for at least 30 minutes.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap to help oil drain faster.
  • If the car has a lower splash shield, be ready to remove it after lifting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Use the floor jack to raise the front of the vehicle at the proper lift point.
  • Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Keep the rear wheels blocked with wheel chocks.
  • Never work under a car supported only by a jack.

Step 2: Remove the drain plug and drain the oil

  • Place the oil drain pan under the engine oil pan.
  • Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain completely, then inspect the drain plug gasket.
  • Replace the drain plug gasket with the new one.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and tighten it with a torque wrench to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Remove the old oil filter

  • Move the oil drain pan under the filter area.
  • Use the oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old filter.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with the filter. If it sticks to the engine, remove it carefully by hand.
  • Double-check for a stuck gasket.

Step 4: Install the new oil filter

  • Put a thin film of clean new oil on the rubber gasket of the new filter.
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten it by hand 3/4 turn more.
  • If using a torque wrench with an oil filter adapter, tighten to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Refill with fresh engine oil

  • Remove the oil filler cap and place a funnel in the opening.
  • Pour in about 4.0 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic oil first.
  • Install the oil filler cap.
  • Start the engine and let it run for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for the oil to settle.

Step 6: Check the oil level

  • Pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean, reinsert it, then pull it out again.
  • Add oil a little at a time with the funnel until the level is near the full mark.
  • The final capacity with filter is about 4.2 quarts, but always finish by checking the dipstick.

Step 7: Inspect for leaks and reinstall any covers

  • Look under the car for any oil leaking from the drain plug or filter.
  • If removed, reinstall the splash shield and tighten its fasteners securely.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands once everything is dry and tight.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
  • Check again for leaks under the oil filter and drain plug.
  • Verify the oil level one more time after a short drive and top off if needed.
  • Reset the maintenance reminder if your vehicle is equipped with one.
  • Recycle the used oil and filter at a proper recycling center.
