📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool enough to touch nearby parts safely.
- Have all oil and parts ready before draining.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle.
- Place jack stands under the proper support points.
- Keep the vehicle stable before you crawl under it.
Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield access panel
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the drain area access fasteners if equipped.
- Move the panel out of the way for drain plug access.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan.
- Use the 14mm socket to remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain fully.
- Install a new drain plug gasket.
- Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the oil filter cap
- Move the drain pan under the oil filter housing.
- Use the oil filter cap wrench 64mm 14-flute to remove the filter cap.
- Remove the old filter element from the cap.
- Use the oil filter drain tool (specialty) if needed to reduce mess.
Step 5: Replace the oil filter parts
- Remove the old oil filter cap O-ring.
- Install the new oil filter cap O-ring in the same groove.
- Lightly coat the new O-ring with clean engine oil.
- Install the new oil filter element onto the cap.
- Reinstall the filter cap and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Refill with fresh engine oil
- Lower the vehicle so it sits level.
- Use the funnel to add about 4.5 quarts of engine oil (SAE 0W-20 full synthetic).
- Install the oil cap.
- Start the engine and let it run 30-60 seconds.
- Shut it off and wait 5 minutes.
Step 7: Check the oil level
- Use the dipstick to check the level on level ground.
- Add oil slowly until the level is near the full mark.
- Do not overfill.
Step 8: Reinstall the access panel and inspect
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the splash shield access panel.
- Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and filter housing.

- Verify the oil level again after a short drive.
- Check for any oil leaks around the drain plug and filter cap.
- Reset the maintenance reminder if your RAV4 has one.
