Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, torque specs, and safety tips for 2001, 2002
🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Change
Fresh oil and a new filter help protect the engine from wear and keep oil pressure steady. On your Accord, this service is straightforward if you use the correct oil grade and replace the drain plug washer.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool before starting so you do not burn yourself.
- Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
- Support the vehicle with jack stands. Never work under a car held only by a jack.
- Wear gloves and safety glasses. Used oil can irritate skin and eyes.
- Do not overtighten the drain plug or oil filter. Aluminum parts can be damaged easily.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground.
- Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.
- Have the new oil, filter, and washer ready before draining.
- Use a drain pan large enough for the full oil capacity.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Accord.
- Place jack stands under the vehicle and lower it onto them.
- Shake the car lightly to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
Step 2: Remove the oil fill cap
- Open the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap.
- This helps the oil drain faster.
Step 3: Drain the old oil
- Position the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use the 17mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain fully.
- Install a new drain plug crush washer on the drain plug.
- Reinstall the drain plug and tighten it with a torque wrench to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the old oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the oil filter.
- Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the old filter.
- Remove it by hand once it breaks loose.
- Check that the old gasket came off with the filter.
Step 5: Install the new oil filter
- Lightly coat the new filter gasket with clean engine oil.
- Spin the new oil filter on by hand until the gasket touches the sealing surface.
- Tighten it to 16 Nm (12 ft-lbs) with a torque wrench if you can reach it.
- Hand-tight is usually enough after gasket contact.
Step 6: Add new engine oil
- Lower the car back to level ground.
- Use a funnel and add about 5.7 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic oil.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
Step 7: Check the oil level
- Start the engine and let it run for about 30 seconds.
- Shut it off and wait a few minutes.
- Check the dipstick and add oil slowly if needed.
- Do not overfill.
Step 8: Inspect for leaks
- Look under the engine for leaks at the drain plug and filter.
- If you see any seepage, shut the engine off and recheck the parts.
✅ After Repair
- Reset the Maintenance Minder in the instrument cluster.
- Take a short drive and recheck the oil level.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center.
