🔧 Escape - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

This job replaces the used engine oil and oil filter in your Escape. Fresh oil protects the turbocharged engine from wear, helps control heat, and keeps internal parts clean.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool until it is warm, not hot. Hot oil can burn skin badly.
  • ⚠️ Support your Escape with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle held up only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves to protect your eyes and skin from used oil.
  • ⚠️ The oil filter is near the lower engine area. Keep hands clear of hot exhaust parts.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 7mm socket
  • 8mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive extension
  • Torque wrench (5-50 Nm range)
  • Oil filter wrench (65mm cap style)
  • Oil drain pan (8-quart minimum)
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Flat trim clip tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (5W-20 full synthetic or synthetic blend) - Qty: 4.3 quarts
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug seal - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels so the vehicle cannot roll.
  • Run the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster, but it should not be hot.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap. This helps the oil drain smoothly.
  • Have a drain pan ready before removing the drain plug.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) at the front jacking point to raise the front of your Escape.
  • Place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under the proper front support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before getting underneath.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Shield

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a 7mm socket, 8mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the lower shield fasteners.
  • If plastic clips are fitted, use a flat trim clip tool to lift them out gently.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
  • Tip: Take a photo first.

Step 3: Drain the Engine Oil

  • Place the oil drain pan (8-quart minimum) directly under the oil drain plug.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
  • Remove the plug by hand once loose. Keep pressure inward until the last thread, then pull it away quickly.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
  • Inspect the drain plug and replace the oil drain plug seal.

Step 4: Reinstall the Oil Drain Plug

  • Wipe the drain plug area clean with shop towels.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first. This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting the bolt crooked.
  • Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench (5-50 Nm range) to tighten the drain plug.
  • Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the Old Oil Filter

  • Move the oil drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the oil filter area.
  • Use the oil filter wrench (65mm cap style), 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to loosen the oil filter counterclockwise.
  • An oil filter wrench is a tool that grips the filter so you can loosen it without crushing it.
  • Unscrew the filter by hand and keep it upright to reduce spills.
  • Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter. If it sticks to the engine, remove it by hand.

Step 6: Install the New Oil Filter

  • Use a clean finger with fresh engine oil to lightly coat the rubber gasket on the new engine oil filter.
  • Thread the new filter onto the engine by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface.
  • Tighten the filter by hand another 3/4 turn after gasket contact.
  • If using the oil filter wrench (65mm cap style) and torque wrench (5-50 Nm range), tighten carefully.
  • Torque to 16 Nm (12 ft-lbs).
  • Tip: Do not overtighten the filter.

Step 7: Reinstall the Lower Engine Shield

  • Lift the lower engine shield back into place by hand.
  • Use the 7mm socket, 8mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to reinstall the fasteners.
  • If plastic clips were removed, press them back in by hand or with the flat trim clip tool.
  • Snug the fasteners evenly. Do not overtighten plastic shield fasteners.

Step 8: Refill the Engine Oil

  • Lower your Escape back to level ground using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Place a funnel into the engine oil fill opening.
  • Pour in about 4.0 quarts of engine oil (5W-20 full synthetic or synthetic blend).
  • Wait one minute, then check the dipstick.
  • Add oil slowly until the level reaches the full mark. Total fill with filter is about 4.3 quarts.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.

Step 9: Check for Leaks

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Turn the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
  • Use shop towels and safety glasses to inspect around the drain plug and oil filter for leaks.
  • Check the dipstick again and top off with the funnel if needed.

Step 10: Reset the Oil Life Monitor

  • Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the steering wheel controls to open the instrument cluster menu.
  • Select Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset.
  • Press and hold OK until the display shows the oil life has reset to 100%.
  • If your Escape shows a slightly different menu layout, look for Settings > Information > Oil Life and hold OK to reset.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Drive for 5-10 minutes, then park on level ground and recheck the oil level after 5 minutes.
  • ✅ Look under your Escape for any fresh oil drips.
  • ✅ Confirm the oil life display shows 100%.
  • ✅ Pour used oil into a sealed container and recycle it at an approved oil recycling center or auto parts store.
  • ✅ Write down the mileage and date of the oil change.
