🔧 Grand Cherokee - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills your Grand Cherokee’s 3.6L V6 with fresh oil. Clean oil protects the timing chains, cam phasers, bearings, and variable valve timing system.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool until it is warm, not hot. Hot oil can burn skin.
  • ⚠️ Support your Grand Cherokee with jack stands if you raise it. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves. Used oil is dirty and can irritate skin.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off the exhaust and belts. Wipe spills right away with shop towels.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this oil change.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 13mm socket
  • 24mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive extension 6-inch
  • Torque wrench 10-100 ft-lbs
  • Oil drain pan 10-quart minimum
  • Funnel
  • Plastic trim clip tool
  • Floor jack rated 3-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 3-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil filter cartridge - Qty: 1
  • Oil filter cap O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Engine oil SAE 0W-20 full synthetic - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Engine oil drain plug washer or replacement drain plug - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • 🌡️ Run the engine for 2-3 minutes if cold, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • 📖 A cartridge filter means the paper filter element sits inside a reusable plastic housing cap, instead of a metal spin-on can.
  • 📱 The oil life reset is done from the instrument cluster, not through Uconnect.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and Secure the Front

  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front lift point to raise your Grand Cherokee high enough to work safely.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points, then lower the vehicle gently onto them.
  • Give the vehicle a light push from the side to make sure it is stable before going underneath.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Access Panel if Equipped

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a plastic trim clip tool to remove any plastic push clips blocking access to the oil drain plug.
  • Set the clips and panel aside in order so they go back in the same spots.
  • Tip: Take a phone photo first.

Step 3: Remove the Oil Fill Cap

  • Open the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap by hand.
  • Lift the dipstick slightly by hand. This helps the oil drain smoothly.
  • Place the funnel nearby, but do not add oil yet.

Step 4: Drain the Old Engine Oil

  • Place the oil drain pan 10-quart minimum under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
  • Remove the drain plug by hand while keeping pressure against it, then pull it away quickly to avoid dropping it into the oil pan.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to a drip. This usually takes 10-15 minutes.
  • Inspect the drain plug and washer. Replace the washer or drain plug if damaged.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Wipe the drain plug area clean with shop towels.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the plug starts crooked and damages the oil pan threads.
  • Use the 13mm socket and torque wrench 10-100 ft-lbs to tighten the drain plug.
  • Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs)

Step 6: Remove the Oil Filter Cap

  • From the top of the engine, locate the black oil filter housing near the front/top center of the 3.6L V6.
  • Use a 24mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension 6-inch, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter cap counterclockwise.
  • Lift the cap straight up slowly. Keep shop towels around it to catch drips.
  • Remove the old paper filter cartridge from the cap by pulling it straight off by hand.

Step 7: Replace the Filter Cap O-Ring

  • Remove the old O-ring from the filter cap by hand or carefully with a clean fingernail.
  • Do not cut or scratch the plastic cap.
  • Lightly coat the new oil filter cap O-ring with fresh SAE 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil.
  • Install the new O-ring into the correct groove on the cap.
  • Tip: Match the old O-ring position.

Step 8: Install the New Oil Filter Cartridge

  • Push the new engine oil filter cartridge onto the oil filter cap by hand until fully seated.
  • Lower the cap and filter into the housing carefully.
  • Thread the cap clockwise by hand first.
  • Use the 24mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension 6-inch, and torque wrench 10-100 ft-lbs to tighten the oil filter cap.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)

Step 9: Refill the Engine Oil

  • Place the funnel into the oil fill opening.
  • Add SAE 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil slowly.
  • Initial fill amount with filter replacement is about 5.9 quarts.
  • Install the oil fill cap by hand.

Step 10: Start and Leak Check

  • Make sure all tools are clear of the engine bay.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and inspect the drain plug and oil filter housing with safety glasses on.
  • Use shop towels to wipe any oil residue so you can tell if a fresh leak appears.

Step 11: Check the Oil Level

  • Wait 5 minutes after shutting the engine off so oil drains back into the pan.
  • Pull the dipstick by hand, wipe it clean with shop towels, reinstall it fully, then pull it again.
  • The level should be near the full mark without going above it.
  • Add oil in small amounts through the funnel if needed.
  • Tip: Do not overfill the engine.

Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Access Panel and Lower Vehicle

  • Use the plastic trim clip tool to reinstall any lower panel clips removed earlier.
  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Grand Cherokee slowly to the ground with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 13: Reset the Oil Life Monitor

  • Use the steering wheel buttons to turn the ignition to RUN without starting the engine.
  • Use the cluster controls to select Vehicle Info > Oil Life.
  • Press and hold the OK button until the oil life resets to 100%.
  • If that path is not shown, use this alternate pedal method: turn ignition to RUN, slowly press the accelerator pedal fully 3 times within 10 seconds, then turn ignition OFF.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Drive for 5-10 minutes, then park on level ground and recheck the oil level after 5 minutes.
  • ✅ Recheck for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter cap.
  • ✅ Confirm the oil life display reads 100%.
  • ✅ Pour used oil into a sealed container and recycle it at an auto parts store or approved oil collection point.
  • ✅ In Panipat, use a local authorized waste-oil recycler or service garage that accepts used engine oil. Do not pour oil into drains, soil, or trash.
