🔧 Grand Cherokee - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

This service replaces the old engine oil and oil filter so your Grand Cherokee’s 5.7L V8 gets clean lubrication and proper engine protection. You’ll drain the oil, replace the filter, reinstall the drain plug, refill with the correct oil, then verify the level and reset the oil life monitor.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool-to-warm engine, not a hot one. Hot oil can burn skin.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands if lifting it. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves to protect your eyes and skin from used oil.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off belts, exhaust parts, and painted surfaces. Wipe spills right away.
  • ⚠️ Used engine oil must be recycled properly at an auto parts store or recycling center.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this oil change.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive torque wrench
  • Oil filter wrench 93mm 15-flute
  • Drain pan 10-quart minimum
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Floor jack rated 3-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 3-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

An oil filter wrench grips the filter so you can loosen it safely.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil 5W-20 full synthetic - Qty: 7 quarts
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Engine oil drain plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • 🌡️ If the engine is cold, run it for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • 🔒 Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap. This helps the oil drain smoothly.
  • 📱 No scan tool or infotainment service mode is required for this oil change.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and Secure the Front

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee at a proper front lift point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before crawling underneath.
  • Stability first. Speed second.

Step 2: Position the Drain Pan

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Slide the drain pan 10-quart minimum under the engine oil drain plug.
  • Position the pan slightly behind the plug because oil may shoot outward at first.

Step 3: Remove the Oil Drain Plug

  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
  • Finish removing the plug by hand while pressing inward slightly, then pull it away quickly.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
  • Inspect the drain plug threads. Replace the engine oil drain plug gasket.
  • Keep fingers away from the oil stream.

Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Wipe the drain plug and oil pan sealing area with shop towels.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first. This prevents cross-threading, which means the plug is started crooked and can damage the oil pan.
  • Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
  • Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the Old Oil Filter

  • Move the drain pan 10-quart minimum under the oil filter area.
  • Use the oil filter wrench 93mm 15-flute with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter.
  • Unscrew the filter by hand once loose.
  • Keep the open end of the filter facing upward as much as possible to reduce spills.
  • Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter. A gasket is the rubber sealing ring on the filter.
  • Double gaskets cause major leaks.

Step 6: Prepare the New Oil Filter

  • Use your finger to apply a light film of clean engine oil 5W-20 full synthetic to the new filter gasket.
  • This helps the gasket seal smoothly and makes the next oil change easier.
  • Do not fill the filter before installation if it cannot be kept upright during installation.

Step 7: Install the New Oil Filter

  • Thread the new engine oil filter on by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface.
  • Tighten it by hand an additional 3/4 turn.
  • If using the oil filter wrench 93mm 15-flute, only snug it gently.
  • Torque to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs) if using a compatible torque setup.
  • Do not overtighten the filter. It can crush the gasket and cause leaks.

Step 8: Add New Engine Oil

  • Lower the vehicle if needed using the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum after removing the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Place a funnel in the oil fill opening on top of the engine.
  • Add about 6.5 quarts of engine oil 5W-20 full synthetic first.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.

Step 9: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Use safety glasses and look under the vehicle for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes so the oil can drain back into the oil pan.

Step 10: Set the Final Oil Level

  • Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean with shop towels, fully reinsert it, then pull it again.
  • Add engine oil 5W-20 full synthetic through the funnel in small amounts until the level reaches the full mark.
  • The normal refill capacity with filter is approximately 7 quarts.
  • Do not overfill. Too much oil can cause foaming and engine damage.

Step 11: Reset the Oil Life Monitor

  • Close all doors and press the ignition button to RUN without starting the engine.
  • Use the steering wheel controls to select Vehicle Info > Oil Life in the instrument cluster display.
  • Press and hold the OK button until the oil life resets to 100%.
  • If the menu method does not reset it, keep ignition in RUN, fully press the accelerator pedal slowly 3 times within 10 seconds, then turn ignition off.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm the dipstick oil level is at the full mark after the engine has been off for 5 minutes.
  • ✅ Check underneath again for leaks after your first short drive.
  • ✅ Make sure the oil fill cap and dipstick are fully seated.
  • ✅ Recycle the used oil and old filter properly.
  • ✅ Write down the mileage and date for your next service record.
