🔧 Tucson - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills your Tucson with fresh oil. Clean oil protects the 2.4L engine from wear, heat, and sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface and keep the vehicle stable on jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ Engine oil can be hot enough to burn skin. Let the engine cool until it is warm, not hot.
  • ⚠️ Never rely on a floor jack alone. A floor jack lifts the vehicle; jack stands safely hold it up.
  • ⚠️ Keep used oil away from your skin and dispose of it at a recycling center or auto parts store.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this oil change.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench 10-80 Nm
  • Oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute
  • Oil drain pan 8-quart minimum
  • Funnel long-neck
  • Floor jack 2-ton minimum
  • Jack stands 2-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil 5W-20 full synthetic - Qty: 5 quarts
  • Spin-on engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tucson on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake firmly.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Start the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. This helps oil drain smoothly.
  • Have the new oil filter, oil, and drain plug washer ready before crawling underneath.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use the floor jack 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Tucson at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands 2-ton minimum under the front pinch welds or approved support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands.
  • Give the vehicle a light push from the side. It should feel solid and not move.
  • Safety first: never work under a jack only.

Step 2: Locate the Drain Plug and Oil Filter

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Slide the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the engine oil pan.
  • The drain plug is at the bottom of the oil pan.
  • The oil filter is a spin-on filter mounted low on the engine.
  • A spin-on oil filter is the metal canister-style filter that unscrews from the engine.

Step 3: Drain the Old Engine Oil

  • Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug.
  • Turn the plug counterclockwise by hand once it is loose.
  • Keep pressure inward on the plug while unscrewing it, then pull it away quickly to reduce splashing.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to a drip.
  • Wipe the drain plug area with shop towels.

Step 4: Replace the Drain Plug Washer

  • Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug by hand.
  • A crush washer is a soft sealing washer that compresses to prevent oil leaks.
  • Install the new oil drain plug crush washer onto the drain plug.
  • Thread the drain plug into the oil pan by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the torque wrench 10-80 Nm with the 17mm socket and tighten the drain plug to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the Old Oil Filter

  • Move the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the oil filter.
  • Use the oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the old oil filter counterclockwise.
  • Once loose, unscrew the filter by hand.
  • Keep the open end tilted upward as you remove it to reduce spilling.
  • Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter.
  • A stuck old gasket can cause a major leak.

Step 6: Install the New Oil Filter

  • Use a clean gloved finger to spread a thin coat of fresh engine oil 5W-20 full synthetic on the new oil filter gasket.
  • Thread the new spin-on engine oil filter onto the engine by hand.
  • Tighten it until the gasket touches the engine, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
  • If using the torque wrench 10-80 Nm and oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute, tighten to Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the filter. It only needs to seal.

Step 7: Add New Engine Oil

  • Lower the vehicle carefully if needed so it sits level before filling.
  • Use the funnel long-neck in the oil fill opening on top of the engine.
  • Pour in 4.5 quarts of engine oil 5W-20 full synthetic first.
  • Reinstall the oil filler cap.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Turn the engine off and wait 3-5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan.

Step 8: Check Oil Level

  • Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean with shop towels.
  • Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again.
  • The oil level should be between the low and full marks.
  • Add oil slowly through the funnel long-neck until the level reaches the full mark.
  • Total refill is usually about 4.8 quarts with filter, but always finish by dipstick level.
  • Add small amounts. Overfilling can damage the engine.

Step 9: Inspect for Leaks

  • Use safety glasses and look under the engine with the vehicle safely supported.
  • Check around the drain plug and oil filter for wet oil.
  • If you see a drip at the drain plug, use the torque wrench 10-80 Nm and 17mm socket to confirm Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
  • If the filter seeps, use your hand or the oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute to snug it slightly.

Step 10: Reset the Service Reminder

  • Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
  • Use the steering wheel buttons to open User Settings > Service Interval.
  • Select Reset if the service interval reminder is active.
  • If your cluster does not show this menu, the reminder may not be enabled on your Tucson.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm the oil pressure warning light turns off within a few seconds.
  • Let the engine idle for 1 minute, then shut it off and recheck for leaks.
  • Recheck the dipstick after 5 minutes and top off only if needed.
  • Record the mileage and date of the oil change.
  • Take used oil and the old filter to an oil recycling center or parts store.
