🔧 Tucson - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills your Tucson with fresh oil. Clean oil protects the 2.0L engine from wear, sludge, and overheating.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground so the vehicle is stable and the oil drains correctly.
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool for 10-20 minutes if it was recently driven. Hot oil can burn skin.
- ⚠️ Support the Tucson with jack stands if you raise it. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves to protect your eyes and skin from used oil.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this oil change.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil, 5W-20 full synthetic - Qty: 4.9 quarts
- Spin-on engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Engine oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park the Tucson on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🛞 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before lifting the front.
- 🌡️ If the engine is cold, run it for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- 🧰 A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to a specific force so they are not too loose or too tight.
- 🧰 A crush washer is a small sealing washer that should be replaced each time the drain plug is removed.
- 🧰 A cup-style oil filter wrench fits over the end of the oil filter so you can loosen it with a ratchet.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front
- Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use the floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum, to lift the front of the Tucson at the front center jacking point.
- Use jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum, under the proper front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and give the vehicle a small shake to confirm it is stable.
- Never crawl under a jack-only vehicle.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Cover Access
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to release any plastic clips or access panel fasteners under the engine, if equipped.
- Move the access cover aside so you can reach the oil drain plug and oil filter.
Step 3: Position the Drain Pan
- Place the drain pan, 8-quart minimum, under the engine oil drain plug.
- Make sure the pan is slightly behind the plug because oil may stream outward at first.
- Use shop towels nearby for spills.
Step 4: Remove the Oil Fill Cap
- Open the hood.
- Remove the engine oil fill cap by hand.
- This lets air enter the engine and helps the old oil drain smoothly.
Step 5: Drain the Engine Oil
- Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug.
- Remove the drain plug by hand once it is loose. Keep pressure on it until the last thread, then pull it away quickly.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip. This usually takes 5-10 minutes.
- Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug.
- Wipe the drain plug with shop towels.
Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Install the new engine oil drain plug crush washer onto the drain plug.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
- Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
- Hand-start every bolt first.
Step 7: Remove the Old Oil Filter
- Move the drain pan, 8-quart minimum, under the oil filter.
- Use the oil filter wrench, 65mm 14-flute cup style, with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter.
- Spin the filter off by hand once it is loose.
- Keep the open end facing upward as much as possible to reduce spills.
- Use shop towels to wipe the oil filter mounting surface on the engine.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter.
Step 8: Install the New Oil Filter
- Dip a gloved finger into fresh 5W-20 full synthetic engine oil.
- Lightly coat the rubber gasket on the new spin-on engine oil filter.
- Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the engine.
- Tighten the filter by hand another 3/4 turn.
- If using a torque wrench and cup wrench, use the oil filter wrench, 65mm 14-flute cup style, and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench.
- Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the filter.
Step 9: Refill the Engine Oil
- Place the funnel into the oil fill opening.
- Pour in about 4.5 quarts of 5W-20 full synthetic engine oil first.
- Wait 30 seconds, then check the dipstick by pulling it out, wiping it with shop towels, reinserting it fully, and pulling it out again.
- Add oil slowly until the level reaches near the full mark.
- Total capacity with filter is about 4.9 quarts.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
Step 10: Check for Leaks
- Make sure the drain pan is still under the engine.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Use safety glasses and look under the Tucson for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Shut the engine off and wait 3-5 minutes for oil to drain back into the oil pan.
Step 11: Final Oil Level Check
- Use shop towels to wipe the dipstick clean.
- Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again.
- Add oil with the funnel if needed until the level is at the full mark.
- Do not overfill above the full mark.
Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Cover and Lower the Vehicle
- Use the flat-head screwdriver to reinstall any lower engine cover clips or access panel fasteners.
- Use the floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum, to lift the Tucson slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly with the floor jack.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
Step 13: Reset the Maintenance Reminder
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the steering wheel buttons to open the instrument cluster menu.
- Select User Settings > Service Interval.
- Select Reset, then confirm the reset.
- If the menu is disabled, select User Settings > Service Interval > Enable Service Interval, then set the mileage and time interval you prefer.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Drive the Tucson for 5-10 minutes, then park on level ground and recheck for leaks.
- ✅ Recheck the oil level after the test drive and top off only if needed.
- ✅ Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center or parts store that accepts used oil.
- ✅ Write down the mileage and date so you know when the next oil change is due.
