🔧 Tucson - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills your Tucson with fresh oil. Clean oil protects the 2.0L engine from wear, heat, and sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool until it is warm, not hot. Hot oil can burn skin.
  • ⚠️ Support your Tucson with jack stands before going underneath. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves to protect your eyes and skin from used oil.
  • ⚠️ Used engine oil is hazardous waste. Collect it in a sealed container and recycle it properly.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this oil change.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive torque wrench
  • Oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute cup style
  • Oil drain pan 8-quart minimum
  • Funnel
  • Floor jack rated 2-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 2-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil 5W-20 synthetic or synthetic blend - Qty: 4.3 quarts
  • Spin-on engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Engine oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Tucson on level ground, shift into 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
  • 🛞 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels so the vehicle cannot roll.
  • 🌡️ Run the engine for 2-3 minutes if it is cold, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • 🧰 A crush washer is a soft sealing washer on the drain plug. Replace it every oil change to help prevent leaks.
  • 🧰 A torque wrench tightens bolts accurately. This helps avoid stripping the oil pan threads.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Tucson at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and give the vehicle a small shake to confirm it is stable.
  • Never work under only a jack.

Step 2: Open the Oil Fill Cap

  • Open the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap by hand.
  • Pull the dipstick up slightly by hand. This helps the oil drain more smoothly.

Step 3: Position the Drain Pan

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Slide the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the engine oil drain plug.
  • Place the pan slightly behind the plug because the oil may shoot outward at first.

Step 4: Drain the Engine Oil

  • Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug.
  • Finish removing the plug by hand while pressing inward slightly, then quickly pull it away.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
  • Wipe the drain plug with shop towels.
  • Remove the old crush washer and install the new engine oil drain plug crush washer by hand.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Thread the drain plug into the oil pan by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the threads are not lined up and can be damaged.
  • Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
  • Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs)
  • Wipe the area clean with shop towels.

Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter

  • Move the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the oil filter area.
  • Use the oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute cup style with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter.
  • Spin the oil filter off by hand. Keep it upright as much as possible because it will contain oil.
  • Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter. The gasket is the rubber sealing ring on the filter.
  • Two gaskets can cause a big leak.

Step 7: Install the New Oil Filter

  • Use your finger to spread a thin film of new engine oil 5W-20 synthetic or synthetic blend on the new filter gasket.
  • Thread the new spin-on engine oil filter onto the engine by hand.
  • Once the gasket touches the engine, tighten the filter by hand another 3/4 turn.
  • If using the oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute cup style, do not overtighten.
  • Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs) if tightening by torque wrench

Step 8: Refill the Engine Oil

  • Place the funnel into the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in about 4.0 quarts of engine oil 5W-20 synthetic or synthetic blend.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
  • Push the dipstick fully back into place by hand.

Step 9: Start and Leak Check

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Watch the oil pressure warning light. It should turn off within a few seconds.
  • Shut the engine off.
  • Use safety glasses and a shop towel to inspect around the drain plug and oil filter for leaks.

Step 10: Set the Final Oil Level

  • Wait 5 minutes so the oil drains back into the oil pan.
  • Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop towels, reinstall it fully, then pull it again.
  • Add oil through the funnel in small amounts until the level is near the full mark.
  • Total capacity with filter is about 4.3 quarts. Do not overfill.

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Tucson slowly to the ground with the floor jack.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Drive for 5-10 minutes, then park on level ground and recheck the oil level after 5 minutes.
  • ✅ Inspect under your Tucson for drips around the drain plug and oil filter.
  • ✅ Recheck the drain plug area after your next drive.
  • ✅ Recycle the used oil and filter at an auto parts store, service shop, or approved recycling center.
  • ✅ If your Tucson has a service reminder display, reset it through the cluster trip/reset controls according to the displayed maintenance menu.
