🔧 Escape - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills your Escape with fresh oil. Clean oil protects the turbocharged 1.6L engine from wear, heat, and sludge buildup.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a flat, solid surface and support the Escape with jack stands before going underneath.
- ⚠️ Never rely on a floor jack alone; a floor jack lifts the vehicle, but jack stands hold it safely.
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool until it is warm, not hot, to avoid burns from oil or exhaust parts.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves because used engine oil can irritate skin and eyes.
- ⚠️ Do not overfill the oil; too much oil can damage the turbocharger and catalytic converter.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this oil change.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil 5W-20 synthetic blend or full synthetic - Qty: 4.3 quarts
- Engine oil filter cartridge with new O-ring - Qty: 1
- Engine oil drain plug seal - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park the Escape on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling.
- 🌡️ Start the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster, but it should not be hot.
- 🧰 Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap using your hand. This helps the oil drain smoothly.
- 📱 To reset the oil life after service, use the instrument cluster buttons, not the center screen.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point or approved front side jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the approved front support points.
- Lower the Escape gently onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Stability check first, always.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to release the plastic retainers on the lower engine splash shield.
- If equipped with bolts, use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove them.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order so they go back in the same locations.
Step 3: Position the Drain Pan
- Place the drain pan 8-quart minimum under the engine oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan.
- The drain plug is the bolt at the lowest part of the oil pan.
- Move the pan slightly toward the rear because oil may shoot outward at first.
Step 4: Drain the Engine Oil
- Use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
- Finish removing the plug by hand while pressing inward slightly, then pull it away quickly.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip. This usually takes 5-10 minutes.
- Inspect the drain plug and replace the engine oil drain plug seal.
- Do not drop the plug in the pan.
Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Wipe the drain plug area with shop towels.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the bolt starts crooked and damages the threads.
- Use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
- Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Remove the Oil Filter Cap
- Move the drain pan 8-quart minimum under the oil filter housing area.
- Use the oil filter cap wrench 74mm 14-flute, 6-inch 3/8-inch drive extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter cap.
- An oil filter cap wrench grips the plastic filter housing cap evenly so it does not get damaged.
- Unscrew the cap slowly and lift it out with the old filter cartridge attached.
- Let extra oil drain into the pan.
Step 7: Replace the Filter Cartridge and O-Ring
- Use your gloved hands to pull the old filter cartridge off the cap.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver carefully to remove the old O-ring from the cap groove.
- An O-ring is a small rubber sealing ring that prevents oil leaks.
- Wipe the cap clean with shop towels.
- Lightly coat the new O-ring with fresh engine oil 5W-20 synthetic blend or full synthetic using your finger.
- Install the new O-ring into the same groove where the old one sat.
- Push the new engine oil filter cartridge with new O-ring onto the cap until fully seated.
Step 8: Reinstall the Oil Filter Cap
- Thread the oil filter cap into the housing by hand first.
- Use the oil filter cap wrench 74mm 14-flute, 6-inch 3/8-inch drive extension, and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the cap.
- Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the plastic cap because it can crack.
Step 9: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield
- Position the lower splash shield back under the engine.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to reinstall plastic retainers.
- If bolts were removed, use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug them evenly.
- Do not overtighten plastic shield fasteners.
Step 10: Lower the Escape
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower the Escape slowly to the ground with the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum.
Step 11: Refill the Engine Oil
- Place the funnel into the oil fill opening on top of the engine.
- Pour in about 4.0 quarts of engine oil 5W-20 synthetic blend or full synthetic.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds, then shut it off.
- Wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the pan.
Step 12: Check and Top Off the Oil Level
- Pull out the dipstick by hand and wipe it clean with shop towels.
- Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again to read the level.
- Add oil through the funnel in small amounts until the level is at or near the upper mark.
- Total fill with filter is approximately 4.3 quarts.
- Do not fill above the upper mark.
Step 13: Reset the Oil Life Monitor
- Sit in the driver seat and turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
- Use the steering wheel controls to select Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset.
- Press and hold OK until the display shows the oil life has reset to 100%.
- If your cluster does not show that menu, press the brake and accelerator pedals fully at the same time with ignition ON, hold for about 25 seconds, and wait for the reset confirmation message.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine and check the oil filter cap and drain plug area for leaks.
- ✅ Shut the engine off, wait 5 minutes, and recheck the dipstick level.
- ✅ Confirm the oil life monitor shows 100%.
- ✅ Pour used oil into a sealed container and recycle it at an auto parts store or approved oil recycling center.
- ✅ In Panipat, use an authorized waste oil collection/recycling option when available; do not dump oil into drains, soil, or household trash.
