🔧 Escape - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
This service replaces the old engine oil and oil filter in your Escape. Fresh oil protects the 2.5L engine from wear, heat, sludge, and poor fuel economy.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a flat, solid surface only. Never crawl under a vehicle supported by a jack alone.
- 🧤 Engine oil can be hot. Let the engine cool until warm, not burning hot.
- 🚗 Use jack stands if raising the front of your Escape. Jack stands are metal supports that safely hold the vehicle after lifting.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this oil change.
- ♻️ Used engine oil and the old filter must be recycled properly. Do not pour oil onto the ground or into drains.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 15mm socket
- 3/8-inch drive ratchet
- 3/8-inch drive extension

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil, SAE 5W-20 synthetic blend or full synthetic - Qty: 5.7 quarts
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Engine oil drain plug gasket or washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Escape on level ground and shift to Park.
- 🅿️ Set the parking brake firmly.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 🔥 Run the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- ⏱️ Wait 5 minutes before draining so hot oil is less likely to burn you.
- 🧰 Lay out all tools and parts before lifting the vehicle.
- 📱 No infotainment or scan-tool procedure is required for this oil change.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Support the Front
- Use wheel chocks behind both rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum, to lift the front of your Escape at the front center jacking point or one approved front side jacking point.
- Place jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum, under the approved front support points.
- Slowly lower the vehicle onto the jack stands, then gently shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
- Never trust the jack alone.
Step 2: Open the Hood and Remove the Oil Fill Cap
- Use your hand to open the hood and support it with the hood prop rod if equipped.
- Use your hand to remove the engine oil fill cap on top of the engine.
- Pull the engine oil dipstick up slightly using your hand. This helps oil drain smoothly.
Step 3: Position the Drain Pan
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Slide the drain pan, 8-quart minimum, under the engine oil drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan.
- Position the pan slightly behind the plug because oil may shoot outward at first.
Step 4: Drain the Engine Oil
- Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension if needed to loosen the drain plug.
- Finish removing the drain plug by hand while pressing inward slightly so oil does not leak until the last threads are free.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
- Use shop towels to wipe oil from the area around the drain hole.
- Inspect the drain plug threads. Replace the engine oil drain plug gasket or washer.
Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first. This prevents cross-threading, which means the threads are going in crooked.
- Use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the drain plug.
- Use the torque wrench, 3/8-inch drive, 10-80 Nm range, with the 15mm socket to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
- Snug is good; overtight is bad.
Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter
- Move the drain pan, 8-quart minimum, under the oil filter area.
- Use the oil filter wrench, 74mm 14-flute, with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter.
- Spin the filter off by hand. Keep it upright as much as possible because it contains oil.
- Use shop towels to wipe the oil filter mounting surface clean.
- Check that the old rubber filter gasket came off with the old filter. A stuck gasket can cause a major oil leak.
Step 7: Prepare the New Oil Filter
- Pour a small amount of fresh SAE 5W-20 engine oil onto your gloved finger.
- Use your finger to lightly coat the rubber gasket on the new engine oil filter.
- This helps the gasket seal and makes the next oil change easier.
Step 8: Install the New Oil Filter
- Thread the new oil filter onto the engine by hand only.
- Once the gasket touches the mounting surface, tighten the filter an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
- If using the oil filter wrench, 74mm 14-flute, use it only gently. Do not crush the filter.
- Oil filter final tightening is typically hand-tight after gasket contact; do not overtighten.
Step 9: Add Fresh Engine Oil
- Place the funnel into the oil fill opening.
- Pour in about 5.0 quarts of SAE 5W-20 engine oil first.
- Remove the funnel and reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
- Push the dipstick fully back into place by hand.
Step 10: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Use safety glasses and look under the vehicle for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Shut the engine off immediately if you see active dripping.
- If dry, shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes so oil can settle in the oil pan.
Step 11: Check and Top Off the Oil Level
- Use your hand to pull the dipstick out.
- Use shop towels to wipe it clean.
- Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again to read the oil level.
- Add oil through the funnel in small amounts until the level reaches the upper safe mark.
- Total refill capacity is about 5.7 quarts with filter replacement.
- Add slowly to avoid overfilling.
Step 12: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum, to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower your Escape slowly to the ground using the floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
Step 13: Reset the Oil Life Monitor
- Use the steering wheel controls and instrument cluster display.
- Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
- Use the left steering wheel arrow buttons to select Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset.
- Press and hold OK until the display shows the oil life has reset to 100%.
- If your cluster shows a slightly different path, look for Settings > Convenience > Oil Life Reset.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine and confirm the oil pressure warning light turns off within a few seconds.
- 🔍 Recheck for leaks around the drain plug and oil filter after a short drive.
- 📏 Park on level ground, wait 5 minutes, then recheck the dipstick level.
- ♻️ Pour used oil into a sealed container and recycle it with the old filter at an auto parts store or authorized oil collection center.
- 📝 Write down the mileage and date of the oil change.
