🔧 Altima - CVT Transmission Fluid Change
This service drains the old CVT fluid and refills your Altima with fresh Nissan NS-3 compatible CVT fluid. The most important parts are using the correct fluid and setting the level with the fluid at the correct temperature.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Use only Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid. Regular automatic transmission fluid can damage the CVT.
- ⚠️ Never rely on a jack alone. Always support your Altima with jack stands.
- ⚠️ Keep the vehicle level when checking fluid level.
- ⚠️ CVT fluid can burn your skin if hot. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
- ⚠️ Do not pressure-flush the CVT. A drain-and-refill is the safer DIY method.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Altima on flat, level ground.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Raise the front with a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum), then support it with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
- For the final fluid level check, your Altima must be level with the engine idling.
- An OBD2 scan tool with live data reads the transmission fluid temperature from the vehicle computer.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the lower splash shield bolts.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release plastic clips if fitted.
- Set the splash shield aside.
- Take a photo first.
Step 2: Drain the CVT Fluid
- Place a drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the CVT drain plug.
- Use a 19mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to loosen the drain plug.
- Remove the plug by hand and let the fluid drain fully.
- Use a measuring jug marked in quarts to measure the amount drained.
- Refill the same amount first.
Step 3: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Remove the old washer from the drain plug.
- Install a new CVT drain plug washer.
- Thread the plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten it.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Add New CVT Fluid
- Open the hood and locate the CVT fill tube/dipstick area.
- If the cap has a lock tab, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to release it.
- Place a long-neck transmission funnel into the fill tube.
- Add the same amount of Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid that came out.
- Use a fluid transfer pump (specialty) if the funnel access is tight.
- Pour slowly to prevent spills.
Step 5: Warm the Fluid and Cycle the Shifter
- Connect the OBD2 scan tool with live data (specialty) to the diagnostic port under the dashboard.
- Start the engine and keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
- Move the shifter slowly through P-R-N-D-L, pausing 3 seconds in each position.
- Return the shifter to P.
- Watch CVT fluid temperature on the scan tool.
- Target level-check temperature is about 35-45°C (95-113°F).
Step 6: Check and Adjust Fluid Level
- Keep the engine idling and keep your Altima level.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe the dipstick clean if equipped with a service dipstick.
- Insert the dipstick fully, then remove it and read the level.
- If low, add Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid in small amounts using the long-neck transmission funnel.
- If overfilled, remove a small amount through the fill tube using the fluid transfer pump (specialty).
- Add small amounts only.
Step 7: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- Shut the engine off once the fluid level is correct.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe spilled fluid from the transmission and shield.
- Reinstall the splash shield.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the splash shield bolts snugly.
Step 8: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift your Altima slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Lower your Altima slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and check the drain plug area for leaks.
- Take a gentle 10-minute test drive.
- Recheck underneath for leaks after the test drive.
- Dispose of old CVT fluid at a recycling center or auto parts store.
- If you feel shuddering, slipping, delayed engagement, or hear whining, stop driving and scan the CVT for codes.
