How to Change CVT Transmission Fluid on a 2015 Toyota Corolla (Drain & Refill)
Step-by-step K313 CVT service with tools, Toyota CVT Fluid FE, fluid temp level check, and torque specs

🔧 Corolla - CVT Transmission Fluid Drain & Refill
This service replaces a portion of the CVT fluid by draining what’s in the pan and refilling with fresh fluid. On your Corolla, the fluid level is set by temperature and an overflow check, so doing the level-check step correctly is the most important part.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours
Assumption: Stock CVT (Toyota K313) using Toyota CVT Fluid FE.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface; the CVT level check is inaccurate if the car isn’t level.
- ⚠️ CVT fluid and exhaust parts can be hot; wear gloves and safety glasses.
- ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep the engine running only when instructed; stay clear of moving parts.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves

- Trim clip removal tool
- 10mm socket
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 6" extension (3/8" drive)
- Torque wrench (10–80 ft-lb range)
- Hex bit socket set (5mm–10mm)
- Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
- OBD2 scan tool with live data (specialty)
- Funnel
- Shop rags

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Plan to check CVT fluid level at the correct temperature (you’ll use live data).
- Make sure you can remove the CVT fill plug before you drain anything.
- Lay out rags and a drain pan; CVT fluid spreads quickly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and level the car
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front, then support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Use wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Level is critical for accurate CVT level.
Step 2: Remove the front underbody cover
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove bolts.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop the plastic clips without breaking them.
Step 3: Locate the CVT fill plug and confirm it will loosen
- Place a drain pan (10-quart minimum) underneath the CVT area.
- Use the correct size from your hex bit socket set (5mm–10mm) with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the fill plug.
- If it won’t budge, stop here—don’t drain the CVT until you know you can refill it.
Step 4: Drain the old CVT fluid
- Use the correct hex bit socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the CVT drain plug and let the fluid drain into the pan.
- Let it drain until it slows to a drip.
- Install a new CVT drain plug crush washer on the drain plug.
- Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lb) using a torque wrench (10–80 ft-lb range).
Step 5: Refill with fresh CVT fluid
- A fluid transfer pump (specialty) is a hand pump that pushes fluid from the bottle up into the transmission fill hole.
- Use the fluid transfer pump (specialty) to pump in Toyota CVT Fluid FE through the fill hole until it starts to slow/near overflow.
- Install a new CVT fill plug crush washer on the fill plug.
- Reinstall the fill plug finger-tight for now (you’ll finalize after level check).
Step 6: Warm up and cycle the CVT, then set the fluid level by temperature
- An OBD2 scan tool with live data (specialty) plugs into the diagnostic port and shows CVT/ATF temperature on your screen.
- Start the engine and keep the car safely supported on jack stands.
- With your foot on the brake, move the shifter slowly through P-R-N-D, pausing 2–3 seconds in each position, then return to P.
- Use the OBD2 scan tool with live data (specialty) to monitor CVT fluid temperature.
- When CVT fluid temperature reaches 35–45°C (95–113°F), proceed immediately to the overflow check.
Step 7: Perform the overflow level check
- With the engine idling and temp still in 35–45°C (95–113°F), place the drain pan underneath.
- Use the correct hex bit socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the CVT overflow/check plug.
- Correct level behavior:
- If fluid flows out in a steady stream, let it drain until it becomes a slow drip.
- If little or no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump (specialty) to add small amounts through the fill port until fluid begins to overflow, then wait for a slow drip.
- Install a new CVT overflow/check plug crush washer and reinstall the overflow/check plug.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lb) using a torque wrench (10–80 ft-lb range).
Step 8: Final tighten the fill plug and reassemble
- Remove the fill plug, verify the washer is in place, then reinstall.
- Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lb) using a torque wrench (10–80 ft-lb range).
- Reinstall the underbody cover using the 10mm socket and replace any broken clips with replacement underbody cover clips.
- Lower the car using the floor jack.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and check underneath for leaks around the drain, fill, and overflow/check plugs.
- Test drive 5–10 minutes. Confirm normal takeoff and no slipping or flare.
- Recheck for leaks after the test drive.
- If you have a scan tool, check for stored transmission codes and clear any that were set during service.
