🔧 Sentra - CVT Transmission Fluid Drain & Refill

On your Sentra’s CVT, the safe DIY service is a drain-and-refill (not a power flush). You’ll drain the old fluid, refill with the correct Nissan-spec CVT fluid, then verify the level with the fluid warmed to the proper temperature range.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and support the car with jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ CVT fluid can be hot. Let the car cool if needed and wear gloves/eye protection.
  • ⚠️ Use only Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid. Wrong fluid can damage the CVT.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the CVT. Clean around the fill area before opening it.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • Socket set (8mm-19mm)
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • Torque wrench (3/8", 10-100 Nm range)
  • Trim clip tool
  • Long-neck funnel
  • Measuring container (quart/liter marked)
  • Infrared thermometer (specialty)
  • OBD-II scan tool that reads CVT fluid temperature (specialty)
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • CVT transmission fluid (Nissan NS-3) - Qty: 5 quarts
  • CVT drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Sentra on a flat, level spot and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Plan to check fluid level with the CVT fluid around 35–45°C (95–113°F).
  • If you don’t have a scan tool: you can use an infrared thermometer (it reads surface temperature by “shooting” a laser at the pan) aimed at the CVT pan near the drain area.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Warm the CVT fluid slightly

  • Start the engine and let it idle for about 5 minutes.
  • With your foot on the brake, move the shifter through P-R-N-D-L and back to P, pausing 2 seconds in each position.
  • Shut the engine off.

Step 2: Lift and safely support the front

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper lift points.
  • Give the car a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before going underneath.

Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a trim clip tool to remove plastic clips.
  • Use your socket set (8mm-19mm) with a ratchet (3/8") to remove any bolts/screws.
  • Set the shield and hardware aside in a neat pile.

Step 4: Drain the old CVT fluid

  • Position a drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the CVT drain plug.
  • Use your socket set (8mm-19mm) with a ratchet (3/8") to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip (typically 10–20 minutes).
  • Use brake cleaner and shop towels to clean the drain plug area.

Step 5: Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer

  • Install a new CVT drain plug crush washer on the drain plug.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first (to avoid cross-threading).
  • Tighten using a torque wrench (3/8", 10-100 Nm range): Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
  • Tip: Always torque—don’t “guess tight.”

Step 6: Measure what came out (important)

  • Pour the drained fluid into a measuring container (quart/liter marked).
  • Write down the amount. You’ll refill with the same amount as a starting point.

Step 7: Refill with Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid

  • Open the hood.
  • Access the CVT fill point (commonly the CVT dipstick tube area). If something blocks access, remove it using your socket set (8mm-19mm) and ratchet (3/8").
  • Insert a long-neck funnel and add Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid equal to what you measured.
  • Reinstall the dipstick/fill cap securely.

Step 8: Bring fluid to the correct temp and set the final level

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • With your foot on the brake, shift through P-R-N-D-L and back to P.
  • Option A (preferred): Use an OBD-II scan tool that reads CVT fluid temperature (specialty) and monitor CVT fluid temp until it’s 35–45°C (95–113°F).
  • Option B: Use an infrared thermometer (specialty) and aim it at the CVT pan; continue once the pan is approximately in the 35–45°C (95–113°F) range.
  • Check the CVT fluid level using the dipstick procedure for your Sentra (wipe, reinsert fully, remove, read).
  • Add NS-3 in small amounts using the long-neck funnel until it’s at the correct mark for that temperature range.
  • Tip: Add a little, wait 30 seconds, recheck.

Step 9: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the car

  • Reinstall the splash shield using the socket set (8mm-19mm), ratchet (3/8"), and trim clip tool.
  • Lower the vehicle using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and check underneath for leaks.
  • Take a 10–15 minute test drive. Make sure acceleration is smooth and there’s no slipping or shudder.
  • Recheck the CVT fluid level at the correct temperature range and adjust if needed.
  • Dispose of used CVT fluid properly (most parts stores accept it).
