🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Assumption: Your X3 uses the BMW/ZF 8-speed with a pan-integrated filter and a side fill/level plug.
Step 1: Remove the underside splash shields
- Use a trim clip tool to pop plastic clips, then use an appropriate socket or Torx socket to remove the fasteners holding the underbody panels.
- Set the panels and fasteners aside in order so reassembly is easy.
Step 2: Identify the fill plug first (important)
- Locate the transmission oil pan and find the fill/level plug on the side of the transmission case.
- Use the correct Torx socket or socket to make sure the fill plug can be loosened before you drain anything.
- Pro tip: If it won’t loosen, stop here.
Step 3: Drain the old transmission fluid
- Position a drain pan under the transmission pan.
- Remove the drain plug using the correct Torx socket or socket and let it drain fully.
- Wipe the area with shop rags.
Step 4: Remove the transmission oil pan
- Support the pan with one hand and remove the pan bolts using a Torx socket and ratchet.
- Lower the pan carefully—more fluid will spill. Keep the drain pan under it.
- Use a plastic scraper and brake cleaner spray to clean the mating surface (where the pan seals to the transmission).
- Do not gouge the aluminum case.
Step 5: Install the new pan (filter is integrated)
- Make sure the new pan seal/gasket is seated correctly on the new pan.
- Hold the new pan in place and start all bolts by hand.
- Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a torque wrench.
- Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs) for the transmission pan bolts.
Step 6: Install the drain plug
- Install a new drain plug sealing ring on the drain plug.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand, then tighten with a torque wrench.
- Torque to 8 Nm (6 ft-lbs) unless your replacement plug specifies otherwise.
Step 7: Pre-fill the transmission (engine OFF)
- Remove the fill plug and install the hose from your fluid transfer pump (specialty).
- Pump in the correct ZF 8-speed spec transmission fluid until it begins to dribble back out of the fill hole.
- Install the fill plug loosely by hand (do not fully torque yet).
Step 8: Set the final fluid level at temperature (engine RUNNING)
- Connect your OBD2 scan tool with live data (specialty) and display transmission fluid temperature.
- Start the engine with the brake held. Slowly move the shifter through P-R-N-D, pausing 2-3 seconds in each gear, then return to P.
- With the engine idling and the vehicle level, remove the fill plug using the correct Torx socket or socket.
- Pump in fluid with the fluid transfer pump (specialty) until it just starts to run out in a steady dribble.
- Only set the level when the fluid temperature is in the correct window: 30°C to 50°C (86°F to 122°F).
- When it becomes a light dribble at that temperature range, install the fill plug with a new fill plug sealing ring.
- Tighten the fill plug with a torque wrench to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall underbody panels
- Reinstall splash shields using the original fasteners with the correct socket or Torx socket.
- Snug fasteners evenly; do not overtighten plastic hardware.

- Start the X3 and check for leaks around the pan, drain plug, and fill plug.
- Test drive 10-15 minutes. Verify smooth shifts and no warning lights.
- Park on a clean spot and re-check for drips after the drive.
