How to Change Automatic Transmission Fluid on a 2017 Toyota RAV4
Step-by-step DIY RAV4 ATF drain and fill with tools, parts, torque specs, and safety tips

🔧 RAV4 - Automatic Transmission Fluid Change (Drain & Fill)
You’ll be draining some of the old automatic transmission fluid (ATF) from your RAV4 and refilling with fresh Toyota WS fluid. This transmission has no dipstick, so fluid level is set using a check/overflow plug at a specific temperature.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2–3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Always support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely only on a jack.
- ⚠️ Work on a flat, level surface so fluid level is accurate.
- ⚠️ Exhaust, engine, and transmission can get very hot; let the car cool before starting.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves; ATF can irritate skin and eyes.
- ⚠️ Keep the parking brake firmly applied and wheels chocked so the RAV4 cannot roll.
- ⚠️ Do not crawl under the RAV4 while the engine is running unless it is securely supported and you are just checking fluid level.
- ⚠️ Use only Toyota WS (World Standard) ATF; other fluids can damage this transmission.
- ⚠️ Avoid over-tightening aluminum transmission case bolts; they can strip easily.

- 📝 Make sure you have enough Toyota WS fluid on hand before you start.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and Support the RAV4
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of your RAV4 at the front center jacking point (behind the front bumper on the subframe).
- Place jack stands under the left and right front pinch welds (the reinforced seams under the doors) and lower the vehicle onto them.
- If possible, also lift and support the rear so the RAV4 is level front-to-back using the floor jack and jack stands.
- Vehicle must be level for correct fluid level.
Step 2: Remove the Under-Cover (Splash Shield)
- Use the 10mm socket and Phillips screwdriver #2 to remove bolts and screws holding the front engine undercover.
- Use the plastic trim tool or flathead screwdriver to carefully pop out any plastic clips.
- Lower the undercover and set it aside.
Step 3: Identify Transmission Plugs
- Locate the transmission on the driver’s side of the engine bay, towards the rear of the engine.
- Underneath, find:
- The main drain plug on the bottom of the transmission pan (usually 14mm hex head).
- The small overflow/check plug in the center of the drain plug area or slightly offset (Allen/hex-style insert or small plug).
- The refill plug on the side of the transmission case (often 10mm Allen/hex or 24mm head, depending on variant).
- Confirm all plugs before loosening anything.
Step 4: Loosen the Refill Plug First
- Place the drain pan under the transmission area just in case.
- Use the correct tool (usually a 10mm socket or 14mm socket depending on your refill plug head) and a 3/8" ratchet to crack loose the refill plug on the side of the transmission, but do not remove it yet.
- Always make sure you can refill before you drain.
Step 5: Remove the Overflow Plug
- Position the drain pan directly under the overflow/check plug in the bottom of the pan.
- Use the proper tool (often an internal hex; if so, use a 10mm socket on the correct hex bit if you have one) to carefully remove the overflow plug; a little fluid may drip out.
- Set the overflow plug and its O-ring or gasket aside; inspect for damage.
Step 6: Drain the Old ATF
- With the drain pan under the main drain plug, use a 14mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove the main drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain completely into the pan; this can take several minutes.
- Use the measuring jug to measure how much fluid came out; this gives you a target refill amount.
- Clean the drain plug with brake cleaner and wipe dry with a shop rag.
Step 7: Reinstall Drain Plug and Overflow Plug
- Install a new drain plug gasket onto the drain plug.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand, then tighten with a 14mm socket and torque wrench to 39 Nm (29 ft-lb).
- Install a new overflow plug O-ring or gasket onto the overflow plug.
- Thread the overflow plug in by hand, then tighten with the appropriate tool and torque wrench to 20 Nm (15 ft-lb).
Step 8: Refill the Transmission (Cold Fill)
- Remove the refill plug completely using the same tool and 3/8" ratchet.
- Place the hose from your fluid transfer pump or a funnel with small tip into the refill opening.
- Pump in fresh Toyota WS ATF, adding roughly the same amount you measured draining out (usually around 3–4 quarts for a single drain & fill).
- Reinstall the refill plug with a new gasket if supplied, and tighten with the correct tool and torque wrench to 28 Nm (21 ft-lb).
Step 9: Initial Clean-Up and Preparation for Level Check
- Spray the area around the drain, overflow, and refill plugs with brake cleaner and wipe clean with shop rags.
- Make sure no tools or rags are left under the RAV4.
- Leave the RAV4 on stands and level; you will need to run the engine for the final level check.
Step 10: Warm the Transmission Fluid
- Connect your OBD2 scan tool to the diagnostic port under the dash.
- With your foot on the brake, start the engine; keep the RAV4 on the stands and the parking brake applied.
- With the engine idling, slowly shift through all positions: P → R → N → D → S (or L) and back to P, pausing 2–3 seconds in each gear. Repeat this 2–3 times to circulate fluid.
- Use the scan tool’s live data to monitor Transmission Fluid Temperature. You are aiming for about 36–46°C (97–115°F) for level setting.
- If you do not have a scan tool, you can use an infrared thermometer on the transmission pan, but a scan tool is more accurate.
Step 11: Set Final Fluid Level (Overflow Check)
- With the engine idling, transmission in P, and temperature at about 36–46°C (97–115°F), place the drain pan under the overflow plug.
- Carefully remove the overflow plug using the correct tool while the engine continues to idle.
-
If fluid:
- Flows out as a steady stream: Wait until it slows to a thin drip, then the level is correct.
- Only drips or nothing comes out: You are low and must add more fluid.
- If low, reinstall the overflow plug loosely, stop the engine, add about 0.2–0.3 quarts more WS through the refill plug using the fluid pump, reinstall refill plug, restart engine, reheat to temp, and re-check overflow.
- Once fluid is a light drip at the correct temperature, install the overflow plug with new O-ring/gasket and tighten with the correct tool and torque wrench to 20 Nm (15 ft-lb) while the engine is still idling.
- Shut the engine off after the plug is fully tightened.
Step 12: Final Reassembly
- Do a final cleaning with brake cleaner around all plugs to remove any spilled ATF.
- Reinstall the engine undercover using the 10mm socket, Phillips screwdriver #2, and plastic trim tool for clips.
- Use the floor jack to lift the RAV4 slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle to the ground.
Step 13: Short Road Test
- Start the engine and let it idle for a minute, checking for any warning lights.
- Drive the RAV4 gently for 10–15 minutes, making sure it shifts smoothly through all gears.
- After the drive, check underneath for any ATF leaks around the transmission pan and plugs.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm there are no transmission warning lights on the dash.
- ✅ Check for leaks on the driveway after parking for a few hours.
- ✅ If you feel slipping, harsh shifts, or see warning lights, stop driving and recheck fluid level and plug tightness.
- ✅ Keep a note of mileage and date; repeat a drain & fill every 30,000–60,000 miles for long transmission life.
