🔧 Tacoma - Automatic Transmission Fluid Drain & Refill

On your Tacoma, the correct way to service the automatic transmission fluid is a drain-and-refill, then a level check using the overflow (check) plug at a specific fluid temperature. This matters because Toyota WS fluid level is temperature-sensitive, and over/under-filling can cause shifting issues.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Support the truck with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
  • 🔥 Transmission fluid can be hot—wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • 📏 The truck must be level during the level check, or the fluid level will be wrong.
  • ⚙️ Keep hands/tools clear of the driveline while the engine is running during the final level check.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • Shop rags
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (10–80 ft-lbs range)
  • 5mm hex bit socket
  • 10mm hex bit socket
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
  • OBD2 scan tool with live data (specialty)
  • Infrared thermometer (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission fluid (Toyota WS equivalent) - Qty: 4 quarts
  • Transmission drain plug gasket (crush washer) - Qty: 1
  • Transmission fill plug gasket (crush washer) - Qty: 1
  • Transmission overflow/check plug gasket (crush washer) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧭 Park on a level surface and chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • 🛻 Raise the front with a floor jack and support with jack stands; keep the truck level (raise rear too if needed).
  • 🌡️ Plan how you’ll measure fluid temperature: use an OBD2 scan tool with live data (reads transmission fluid temp), or use an infrared thermometer on the transmission pan as a backup.
  • 🧰 Have your fluid transfer pump ready (it’s a hand pump that pushes fluid into the fill hole).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the drain, overflow (check), and fill plugs

  • Slide your drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the transmission.
  • Find the fill plug on the side of the transmission case (you’ll remove this to add fluid) using a 10mm hex bit socket.
  • Find the overflow/check plug (small hex plug used for level checking) using a 5mm hex bit socket.
  • Find the drain plug at the bottom using a 14mm socket.
  • Tip: Always loosen fill plug first.

Step 2: Loosen the fill plug first (important)

  • Use a 10mm hex bit socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the fill plug.
  • If the fill plug won’t loosen, stop here—do not drain the transmission yet.

Step 3: Drain the old transmission fluid

  • Position the drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the drain plug.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let it drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
  • Clean the drain plug and replace the drain plug gasket (crush washer).

Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench and 14mm socket: Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the area clean with shop rags.

Step 5: Add fresh Toyota WS fluid (initial fill)

  • Install a new fill plug gasket (crush washer) on the fill plug.
  • Remove the fill plug fully using a 10mm hex bit socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Use the fluid transfer pump (specialty) to pump Toyota WS equivalent fluid into the fill hole.
  • Add roughly the same amount that drained out (most drain-and-fills are about 3–4 quarts).
  • Reinstall the fill plug finger-tight for now using the 10mm hex bit socket.

Step 6: Warm up and circulate fluid

  • Start the engine (truck still safely on jack stands and level).
  • With your foot on the brake, move the shifter slowly through each gear (P-R-N-D-4-3-2-1 if applicable), pausing 2–3 seconds in each.
  • Use an OBD2 scan tool with live data (specialty) to monitor transmission fluid temperature.

Step 7: Set the fluid level using the overflow/check plug

  • With the engine idling, bring fluid temp to about 40°C (104°F).
  • Place the drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the overflow/check area.
  • Use a 5mm hex bit socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the overflow/check plug.
  • Correct level behavior at ~40°C (104°F):
  • No fluid comes out: add fluid through the fill hole using the fluid transfer pump (specialty) until a thin stream starts, then wait until it becomes a light drip.
  • A heavy stream pours out: let it drain until it becomes a light drip.
  • Install a new overflow/check plug gasket (crush washer), then reinstall the overflow/check plug using the 5mm hex bit socket.
  • Use a torque wrench with the appropriate hex bit: Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Final tighten the fill plug

  • Remove the fill plug again using the 10mm hex bit socket if you need to top off (only if Step 7 showed low).
  • Reinstall the fill plug with its gasket using a torque wrench and 10mm hex bit socket: Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
  • Clean any spilled fluid with shop rags.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧼 Check for leaks around the drain, overflow/check, and fill plugs with a flashlight (use shop rags to confirm).
  • 🛣️ Road test 10–15 minutes, then re-check for leaks after parking.
  • 📦 Dispose of old ATF properly (most parts stores accept used fluid).
  • 🧠 If shifting feels abnormal, re-check fluid level at the correct temperature.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
