How to Change Automatic Transmission Fluid (Drain & Refill) on a 2020 Mazda CX-30

🔧 CX-30 - Automatic Transmission Fluid Drain & Refill
On your CX-30, a safe DIY service is typically a drain-and-refill (not a full “flush”). This replaces a portion of the fluid, helps shift quality, and is much safer for a first-time DIYer than a power flush.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the SUV with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Transmission fluid can be hot; let the drivetrain cool to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the fill point—clean around it before opening.
- ⚠️ Do not “flush” with solvents or high-pressure machines at home.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Automatic transmission fluid (Mazda ATF-FZ) - Qty: 4-5 quarts
- Transmission drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Plan to do a drain-and-refill (about 3-4 quarts typically come out).
- Find your fill method before you drain: your CX-30 may use a dipstick tube or a fill plug.
- Tip: If you can’t refill, don’t drain.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the fill point (dipstick vs fill plug)
- Open the hood and look for a transmission dipstick (a small handle labeled ATF). Use a shop rag to wipe it clean.
- If you do not see a dipstick, you’ll refill through a fill plug on the transmission case using a fluid transfer pump (specialty) (a hand pump that pushes fluid from a bottle into a hole).
- Clean the area around the dipstick tube or fill plug using brake cleaner spray and shop rags.
Step 2: Raise and support the SUV
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front support points and lower onto stands.
- Keep the SUV level if possible (level is important for accurate fluid level).
Step 3: Remove the lower under cover (if equipped)
- Use a socket set (8mm-19mm) and ratchet to remove the bolts.
- Use a flat trim clip tool to pop plastic clips out.
- Set the cover and fasteners aside in order.
Step 4: Drain the transmission fluid
- Position the drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the transmission drain plug.
- Use the correct socket set (8mm-19mm) and ratchet to remove the drain plug slowly.
- Let it drain until it’s down to a slow drip.
Step 5: Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer
- Remove the old washer and install the new transmission drain plug crush washer.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten with a torque wrench (10-80 Nm range): Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
- Tip: Never reuse a crush washer.
Step 6: Refill (choose your path)
- Path A (Dipstick tube refill):
- Insert a long-neck funnel into the dipstick tube.
- Pour in Mazda ATF-FZ slowly—start with about the amount you drained.
- Path B (Fill plug refill):
- Locate the transmission fill plug on the case.
- Use the correct socket set (8mm-19mm) and ratchet to remove the fill plug.
- Use a fluid transfer pump (specialty) to pump Mazda ATF-FZ in.
- Reinstall the fill plug and tighten using a torque wrench (10-80 Nm range): Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Warm up and set the final level
- With the SUV still level, start the engine and keep your foot on the brake.
- Move the shifter slowly through P-R-N-D-M and back to P, pausing 2 seconds in each position.
- Dipstick method:shop rag, pull the dipstick, wipe, reinsert, then check level. Add small amounts with the long-neck funnel until it’s in the correct range.
- Fill-plug method:
Step 8: Reinstall under cover and lower the SUV
- Reinstall the under cover using the socket set (8mm-19mm), ratchet, and flat trim clip tool.
- Lift slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), and lower the SUV.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and check underneath for leaks.
- Take a 10-15 minute drive and confirm normal shifting.
- Recheck the level (dipstick method) and top up if needed—add small amounts only.
- Dispose of used ATF properly at a recycling center or parts store.
