🔧 RAV4 - Automatic Transmission Fluid Drain & Refill

On your RAV4, routine transmission service is typically a drain-and-refill (not a full “flush”). You’ll drain the old fluid, refill with Toyota ATF WS, then set the fluid level correctly (this step matters most).

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely on a jack.
  • ⚠️ Transmission fluid level must be checked with the vehicle level; nose-up/down can cause incorrect fill.
  • ⚠️ Exhaust and transmission can be hot; wear gloves and let it cool if needed.
  • ⚠️ Keep the engine running only when instructed; keep hands/clothes away from belts and fans.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (8-quart minimum)
  • Metric socket set (10mm-19mm)
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • Hex/Allen bit socket set (5mm-10mm)
  • Long-neck funnel
  • Fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty)
  • OBD2 scan tool that reads ATF temperature (specialty)
  • Trim clip remover
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Toyota ATF WS automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 4-5 quarts
  • Transmission drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
  • Transmission fill plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Raise the front (or the whole vehicle) with a floor jack and support with jack stands so the vehicle sits level.
  • Remove any lower splash shield panels using a 10mm socket and trim clip remover.
  • Set up your OBD2 scan tool that reads ATF temperature (specialty); you’ll use it later to verify fluid temperature for the final level check.
  • Tip: Measure what you drain; refill close to that.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify your fill method (dipstick vs sealed)

  • Look for a transmission dipstick handle in the engine bay (often near the back/driver side area).
  • If you have a dipstick, you can refill from the top with a long-neck funnel and confirm level on the dipstick.
  • If you do not have a dipstick, your RAV4 uses a “sealed” level-check setup using an overflow/level plug (a small inner plug). An overflow/level plug is a plug that lets excess fluid run out when the level is correct.

Step 2: Loosen the fill plug first

  • Place a drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the transmission.
  • Use the appropriate hex/Allen bit socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to crack loose the transmission fill plug before draining.
  • This ensures you won’t get stuck with an empty transmission that you can’t refill.

Step 3: Drain the old transmission fluid

  • Use the appropriate metric socket or hex/Allen bit socket to remove the transmission drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain into the drain pan until it slows to a drip.
  • Measure the amount drained (use a marked container) so you can refill close to that amount.

Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer

  • Clean the drain plug and the sealing surface with shop rags.
  • Install a new transmission drain plug crush washer.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 5A: Refill (if your RAV4 has a dipstick)

  • Insert a long-neck funnel into the dipstick tube.
  • Pour in Toyota ATF WS equal to what you drained (typically around 3-4 quarts for a drain-and-refill).
  • Start the engine and, with your foot on the brake, shift slowly through P-R-N-D and back, pausing 2-3 seconds in each position.
  • With the engine idling, check the dipstick per the markings (HOT/COLD if present) and adjust in small amounts as needed.

Step 5B: Refill (if your RAV4 is sealed / no dipstick)

  • Use a fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty) to pump Toyota ATF WS into the fill port until fluid starts to dribble back out.
  • Install the fill plug finger-tight for now (final torque after level set).

Step 6: Set the final fluid level (sealed transmissions)

  • Connect your OBD2 scan tool that reads ATF temperature (specialty) and monitor transmission fluid temperature.
  • Start the engine and let it idle; keep the vehicle level on jack stands.
  • With your foot on the brake, move the shifter through each gear range and back to Park to circulate fluid.
  • When ATF temperature is in the correct checking window (commonly around 40°C / 104°F for Toyota WS level checks), remove the level/overflow plug (the small inner plug) using the correct hex/Allen bit socket.
  • If a thin stream/dribble comes out, the level is correct; let it reduce to a slow drip.
  • If no fluid comes out, add WS through the fill port using the fluid transfer pump until it begins to dribble from the level/overflow opening.
  • Reinstall the level/overflow plug and tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Torque the fill plug and reinstall covers

  • Install a new transmission fill plug crush washer.
  • Tighten the fill plug with a torque wrench: Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall the splash shields using a 10mm socket and any clips with the trim clip remover.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and check underneath for leaks.
  • Take a 10-15 minute test drive. Verify smooth shifts and no flare/slip.
  • Recheck for leaks after the drive.
  • Dispose of used ATF at a recycling center or parts store that accepts fluids.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $45-$90 (parts only)

Quick question (so I can point you to the exact method): Does your RAV4 have a transmission dipstick in the engine bay, or is it sealed (no dipstick)?
