šŸ”§ Camry - Automatic Transmission Fluid Drain & Fill

This service replaces a portion of the old transmission fluid by draining what’s in the pan and refilling to the correct level. On your Camry’s sealed automatic transmission (no dipstick), the fluid level must be set at a specific fluid temperature using the overflow/level plug method.

Assumption: U760E 6-speed automatic using Toyota ATF WS with an overflow-style level check.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a level surface and support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • āš ļø Transmission fluid can be hot; wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • āš ļø The engine must run during the final level-check; keep hands/loose clothing away from belts/fans.
  • āš ļø Keep the car level front-to-rear and side-to-side or the fluid level will be wrong.
  • āš ļø Do not mix fluids; use Toyota ATF WS only.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this drain & fill.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum, pair)

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission fluid (Toyota ATF WS) - Qty: 4 quarts
  • Transmission drain plug gasket (crush washer) - Qty: 1
  • Transmission refill/overflow plug gasket(s) - Qty: 1-2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • 🧰 Raise the front and rear enough to keep the car level on four jack stands.
  • 🧰 If equipped, remove the lower engine splash shield/undercover using a 10mm socket and a trim clip tool.
  • 🧰 Set up your OBD2 tool so you can read ATF temperature (this is the temperature of the transmission fluid).

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Warm the transmission fluid slightly

  • Start the engine and let it idle 3-5 minutes.
  • With your foot on the brake, shift slowly through P-R-N-D-S and back to P, pausing 2 seconds in each position.
  • Shut the engine off.
  • Warm fluid drains faster and more completely.

Step 2: Locate the fill and drain points

  • Under the car, locate the transmission case and identify the fill plug (side of case) and the drain plug (bottom of pan/case).
  • Clean around both plugs using brake cleaner spray and shop rags to prevent dirt entry.

Step 3: Loosen the fill plug first

  • Use the correct hex bit socket or socket (varies by plug style) with a ratchet to crack the fill plug loose.
  • Do not remove it yet—just confirm it will come out.
  • If you can’t fill it, don’t drain it.

Step 4: Drain the old fluid

  • Place the drain pan under the drain plug.
  • Remove the drain plug using the appropriate socket and ratchet.
  • Let it drain until it becomes a slow drip.
  • Install a new drain plug gasket (crush washer).
  • Reinstall and tighten the drain plug with a torque wrench: Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Refill with Toyota ATF WS

  • Remove the fill plug using the correct hex bit socket or socket and a ratchet.
  • Use a fluid transfer pump (hand pump) to pump Toyota ATF WS into the fill port.
  • Add fluid until it begins to dribble back out of the fill port (initial fill).
  • Install the fill plug finger-tight for now (you’ll finalize after the level set).

Step 6: Set fluid level at the correct ATF temperature (overflow method)

  • Connect your OBD2 scan tool and display Transmission Fluid Temperature (ATF Temp).
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • With foot on brake, shift through all gears again, then return to P.
  • When ATF temperature is in the level-check range: 40-45°C (104-113°F), remove the level/overflow plug (usually inside the drain area) using the correct hex bit socket.
  • Interpret what you see:
    • If a thin stream/dribble comes out, the level is close to correct—let it drip until it becomes a light drip.
    • If nothing comes out, pump more ATF WS in through the fill port using the fluid transfer pump until fluid begins to drip from the overflow.
    • If a heavy stream pours out, wait until it slows to a light drip.
  • Install a new gasket (if used) and tighten the overflow/level plug with a torque wrench: Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Final-tighten the fill plug and clean up

  • With the engine off, install the fill plug gasket (if applicable) and tighten the fill plug using a torque wrench: Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
  • Spray any spilled fluid with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop rags.
  • Reinstall the splash shield using a 10mm socket and trim clip tool.

āœ… After Repair

  • āœ… Start the engine and check underneath for leaks around the drain, overflow, and fill plugs.
  • āœ… Test drive 10-15 minutes, then recheck for leaks on a clean, dry surface.
  • āœ… If you notice slipping, flare (rev rise), or harsh shifts, stop driving and re-check the level procedure—sealed units are very sensitive to fluid level.
  • āœ… Dispose of used ATF at a recycling center/parts store that accepts waste fluids.
