This job replaces a portion of your automatic transmission fluid by draining the pan and refilling it, then setting the fluid level at the correct temperature. It’s the safest DIY method on your Sportage (a full “flush” is not recommended unless the shop has the correct equipment and procedure).

- ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the Sportage on jack stands before going underneath.

- ⚠️ Do not crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack.

📋 Before You Begin

- 🚗 Warm the transmission with a 10–15 minute drive so the fluid drains more completely.
- 📏 Raise and support the Sportage so it sits level on four points (level is critical for correct fluid level).
- 🧰 If you have a scan tool, set it up to view Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) (this is the fluid temp inside the transmission).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any bolts.
- Set the shield and hardware aside in order.
Step 2: Locate the drain and fill/check plugs
- Place a drain pan under the transmission pan area.
- Identify the drain plug at the lowest point and the fill/check plug on the side of the transmission case.
- Always loosen the fill/check plug first.
Step 3: Loosen the fill/check plug first
- Use a 17mm socket or 10mm hex bit socket (varies by plug style) to crack it loose.
- If it won’t loosen, stop here (you don’t want to drain it and then be unable to refill).
Step 4: Drain the old transmission fluid
- Use a 24mm socket (common size) to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain until it slows to an occasional drip (10–20 minutes).
- Clean the drain plug with shop rags and brake cleaner spray.
- Install a new crush washer on the drain plug.
- Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Refill with new ATF (initial fill)
- Use a fluid transfer pump (specialty) to pump SP-IV equivalent ATF into the fill/check port.
- Add approximately what you drained (typical drain-and-fill is often 4–5 quarts).
- Reinstall the fill/check plug loosely by hand for now.
Step 6: Start, cycle gears, and warm to level-check temperature
- Start the engine and keep your foot on the brake.
- Slowly move the shifter through P-R-N-D and back to P, pausing 2–3 seconds in each position.
- Monitor TFT with a scan tool (specialty). If you don’t have one, use an infrared thermometer on the transmission pan as an estimate.
- Target fluid level check temperature: 50–60°C (122–140°F).
Step 7: Set the final fluid level (overflow method)
- With the engine idling, vehicle level, and TFT at 50–60°C (122–140°F), place the drain pan underneath again.
- Use a 17mm socket or 10mm hex bit socket to remove the fill/check plug.
- Correct level behavior: a thin stream that quickly becomes a steady drip.
- If no fluid comes out, pump in ATF with the fluid transfer pump (specialty) until it just begins to overflow.
- Install a new crush washer on the fill/check plug and reinstall it.
- Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall splash shield and clean up
- Reinstall the splash shield using the 10mm socket and trim clip removal tool.
- Spray any spilled fluid with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop rags.
- Lower the Sportage safely using the floor jack.
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Test drive 10–15 minutes. Verify smooth shifts and no slipping.
- 🕵️ Recheck for leaks around the drain plug and fill/check plug.
- 🧾 Properly dispose of used ATF at a recycling center or parts store that accepts fluids.
