1500 Classic - Cabin Air Filter Replacement 🌬️

Your 1500 Classic does not use a traditional cabin air filter from the factory. Ram left the slot in the HVAC box, but did not install a filter unless a previous owner added an aftermarket kit.

The good news: you can add a cabin filter yourself with a simple kit. I’ll show you how.

Parts & Tools 🧰

  • 🧩 Cabin filter retrofit kit for Ram 1500 (usually includes:
    • Cabin air filter (rectangular)
    • Plastic access door/cover
    • Sometimes a small template for cutting
  • 🪚 Utility knife or small hobby saw – to cut the opening in the HVAC box (plastic housing under the dash).
  • 🔧 Trim tool or flat plastic pry tool – helps remove panels without scratching.
  • 🔦 Flashlight – to see under the dash.
  • 😷 Dust mask and safety glasses – protects you from plastic dust and debris.

A cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the vents (dust, pollen, etc.).

Safety & Prep ⚠️

  • 🛑 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition off.
  • 🧤 Wear eye protection and a mask when cutting the plastic housing.
  • 📦 Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out while you work.

Step 1 – Access the HVAC Housing (Behind Glove Box) 📦

  1. Open the glove box fully.
  2. On each side of the glove box, you’ll see plastic stops that prevent it from dropping down.
    • Gently push the sides of the glove box inward to clear the stops.
    • Let the glove box swing down so you can see behind it.
  3. Look behind the glove box toward the center of the truck. You’ll see a large black plastic box – this is the HVAC housing (where the filter slot is).

Step 2 – Find the Filter Slot Location 🔍

  1. On the front face of the HVAC housing (behind where the glove box normally sits), look for a rectangular outline in the plastic.
    • It’s usually about the size of a pencil case, with slightly rounded corners.
    • Sometimes it’s marked with small raised lines or a faint rectangle.
  2. This outlined rectangle is where the filter access door will go. From the factory, it’s not cut open.

Step 3 – Cut the Opening ✂️

Take your time here; you’re just cutting thin plastic.

  1. Put on your safety glasses and mask.
  2. Use your utility knife or small hobby saw:
    • Score (lightly cut) along the rectangular outline first.
    • Go over the same line several times until the plastic weakens.
    • Carefully push through and cut all the way around the rectangle.
  3. Remove the cut-out piece of plastic and clean up any rough edges with the knife.
  4. Vacuum or wipe away any plastic shavings so they don’t fall into the blower fan.

Step 4 – Install the Cabin Filter 🧼

  1. Take the new cabin air filter from the kit.
  2. Look for an airflow arrow printed on the side of the filter.
    • On your truck, airflow is typically from top to bottom, so the arrow should point down.
  3. Slide the filter into the new opening:
    • Make sure it sits flat and fully inside the housing.

Step 5 – Install the Access Door 🚪

  1. Take the plastic access door/cover from the kit.
  2. Align it with the opening you cut:
    • Most doors have tabs on one side that hook in first, then the other side snaps in.
  3. Press until you feel or hear it click into place all around.

Step 6 – Reinstall the Glove Box 📥

  1. Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position.
  2. Push the sides of the glove box inward again to get the stops past the dash opening.
  3. Let it close normally and check that it opens and closes smoothly.
  4. Put your items back in the glove box.

After You’re Done ✅

  • 🌡️ Start the engine, turn on the fan and A/C, and check for:
    • Normal airflow from the vents.
    • No unusual noises (like plastic rubbing or rattling).
  • 🗓️ Plan to replace the cabin filter about every 15,000–20,000 miles, or once a year in dusty areas.
