2022 Subaru Forester Headlight Not Working? Troubleshoot LED vs Bulb Replacement Guide
Learn which lamps are serviceable, how to replace turn-signal/parking bulbs, and when the LED headlamp assembly must be swappedāplus tools, parts, and safety tips

š§ Forester - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Forester Touring, the main headlights (low beam/high beam/DRL) are LED and are not ābulb replaceableā like older halogen setups. If the LED headlight itself is out, Subaru service procedure is typically replacement of the headlamp assembly (and sometimes the LED control module), not a bulb.
Some other front bulbs are replaceable (most commonly the front turn signal/parking/side marker inside the headlamp housing), and those can be a true ābulb swap.ā
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-3.0 hours (depends on which lamp)
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Let the headlights cool before touching the housing.
- ā ļø Do not touch any halogen bulb glass with bare fingers (oil shortens bulb life).
- ā ļø If removing the bumper/headlamp assembly, protect paint with masking tape on edges.
- ā ļø Battery disconnect is recommended if unplugging the headlamp assembly connectors.

š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the lighting switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- If youāll unplug the headlamp assembly: use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal (set it aside so it canāt spring back).
- ā Quick check so I give you the exact correct procedure (answer these two):
- Which light is out: main headlight output (low/high/DRL) or the front turn signal/parking light inside the headlamp?
- Is it left, right, or both sides?
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which lamp youāre replacing
- Turn the ignition to ON and switch on each function one at a time (low beam, high beam, hazards/turn signal).
- Use a flashlight to look through the lens and confirm which section is dark.
- If the main headlight/DRL is out: itās an LED unit and is typically replaced as a headlamp assembly.
- If the turn signal/parking/side marker is out: thatās usually a replaceable bulb.
Step 2: Access the rear of the headlamp area (bulb-style lamps)
- Open the hood.
- If space is tight, remove the intake snorkel/upper ducting using a 10mm socket and Phillips #2 screwdriver (only the pieces blocking your hand).
- Reach behind the headlamp and locate the bulb socket for the failed function.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand; if itās stuck, use nitrile gloves for grip.
- Pull the socket straight back to remove.
- Remove the bulb from the socket (usually pulls straight out). Donāt force the tabs.
Step 4: Install the new bulb and reassemble
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket (it should seat firmly).
- Reinsert the socket into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Reinstall any ducting using a 10mm socket and Phillips #2 screwdriver.
Step 5: If your main LED headlight is out (assembly-style repair)
- Apply masking tape (1") to bumper-to-fender edges to protect paint.
- Raise the front safely using a floor jack, support with jack stands, and use wheel chocks.
- If removing any front wheels for liner access: loosen/tighten lug nuts with a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs) and Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).
- Remove bumper cover fasteners and clips using a trim clip removal tool, Phillips #2 screwdriver, and 10mm socket, then pull the bumper cover forward enough to access headlamp mounting bolts and connectors.
- Unplug the headlamp connectors, remove the headlamp mounting bolts with a 10mm socket, and swap the assembly.
- Note: Iāll provide the exact fastener locations and Subaru torque specs for the headlamp/bumper fasteners once you confirm whether youāre doing the LED assembly job (and which side).
ā After Repair
- Test all front lighting functions: low beam, high beam, DRL, turn signals, and hazards.
- If you disconnected the battery: reconnect using a 10mm socket and confirm no warning lights remain.
- If you replaced a headlamp assembly: verify the beam pattern looks even; aim may be required if it appears high/low.
