🔧 Escape - Power Steering Pump Replacement

Your Escape does not use a traditional hydraulic power steering pump. Instead, it has an electric power steering (EPS) system built into the steering rack. That means there is no separate pump, no power steering fluid, and no belt-driven steering pump to replace.

Difficulty Level: — | Estimated Time: — (pump replacement not applicable)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Do not try to “add” or “flush” power steering fluid on your Escape; it has no power steering fluid reservoir.
  • ⚠️ If your steering is heavy, intermittent, or shows a steering warning light, the issue is usually with the electric steering rack, wiring, battery/charging system, or a control module.
  • ⚠️ Steering system faults can affect vehicle control; if the steering feels unsafe, avoid driving at high speeds and have it inspected promptly.
  • ⚠️ Any work around the steering column or airbag requires battery disconnection and care to avoid accidental airbag deployment.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for steering system diagnosis (not pump replacement):

  • 🔧 OBD-II scan tool with Ford-specific capabilities (specialty)
  • 🔧 Digital multimeter
  • 🔧 Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • 🔧 Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • 🔧 Wheel chocks
  • 🔧 1/2" drive ratchet
  • 🔧 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 🔧 Metric socket set (8mm–21mm)
  • 🔧 Metric combination wrench set (8mm–21mm)
  • 🔧 Torx bit set
  • 🔧 Trim removal tool set (plastic)
  • 🔧 Work light
  • 🔧 Safety glasses
  • 🔧 Mechanic’s gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for steering-related repairs:

  • 🔩 Electric power steering rack assembly - Qty: 1 (only if diagnosed faulty; this replaces the motor and gear, not a pump)
  • 🔩 Steering rack mounting bolts - Qty: 4 (replace if Ford specifies one-time-use)
  • 🔩 Intermediate steering shaft pinch bolt - Qty: 1
  • 🔩 Front subframe bolts - Qty: 4 (if removed, often one-time-use)
  • 🔩 Battery (Group-size correct for Escape) - Qty: 1 (only if battery tests weak; EPS is sensitive to low voltage)
  • 🔩 Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 tube
  • 🔩 Cable ties - Qty: 1 pack

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the steering wheel to center (wheels straight ahead).
  • Open the hood and make sure the battery terminals are clean and tight; EPS needs good voltage.
  • If you plan to disconnect connectors on the steering rack or work near the steering column, disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench and wait at least 5 minutes to allow modules to power down.
  • If you have a scan tool, be ready to read ABS and Steering/PSCm (power steering control module) codes.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm There Is No Power Steering Pump

  • Open the hood and use a work light to look at the front of the engine where accessory belts run.
  • You will see the alternator, A/C compressor, and possibly an idler pulley, but no power steering pump or fluid reservoir.
  • This confirms your Escape uses electric power steering (EPS) integrated into the steering rack.

Step 2: Check for Warning Lights and Codes

  • Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
  • Look for a steering wheel icon or “Steering assist fault” message in the cluster.
  • Connect your OBD-II scan tool and read codes from the Steering/PSCM, ABS, and PCM modules.
  • Write down any codes; they guide whether the problem is the rack, wiring, or power supply.

Step 3: Basic Battery and Charging Check

  • With the engine off, use a digital multimeter to measure battery voltage at the terminals. You should see about 12.4–12.7 V.
  • Start the engine and measure again. You should see about 13.5–14.7 V.
  • If voltages are low, have the battery and alternator tested. Weak power can cause heavy steering or EPS shutdown.

Step 4: Inspect Steering Rack Connectors (Visual Check Only for Now)

  • Safely raise the front of the Escape with a floor jack and support it on jack stands. Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • From under the vehicle, locate the electric steering rack; it is bolted to the front subframe, behind the engine, running left to right.
  • Visually inspect the large electrical connector on the rack for damage, corrosion, or loose locking tabs. Do not pry forcefully.
  • If you need to disconnect the connector, first disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench, wait 5 minutes, then gently release the connector lock.
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to clean, dry terminals before reconnecting.

Step 5: Understand What “Pump Replacement” Means on This Escape

  • On this model, if the steering assist motor or internal gears fail, the usual repair is replacement of the entire electric steering rack assembly, not a pump.
  • This is an advanced job involving subframe support, alignment, and often module programming or calibration.
  • DIY steering rack swap is not beginner-friendly.

Step 6: If You Still Want Steering Rack Replacement Info

  • If your goal is to go beyond diagnosis and you’re considering replacing the steering rack yourself, reply and I can outline the full procedure for rack replacement on your Escape (with subframe support, bolt torques, and alignment notes).
  • This will be more complex than typical beginner work; you would need another person, good jack stands, and a wheel alignment afterward.

âś… After Repair

  • After any steering-related work, start the engine and slowly turn the wheel from lock to lock while the vehicle is stationary to confirm smooth assist.
  • Check for any new warning lights or messages on the cluster.
  • If the steering rack is replaced, a professional wheel alignment is required.
  • Some EPS repairs may need steering angle sensor calibration with a scan tool.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: Power steering pump replacement is not applicable on your Escape. For comparison, steering rack replacement at a shop typically runs $1,200–$2,000 (parts + labor).

DIY Cost: For a steering rack replacement, typically $500–$900 (rack + bolts, no alignment).

You Save: Approximately $600–$1,100 if you did a rack replacement yourself, but this is advanced work.

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. Steering rack replacement takes a shop approximately 4–6 hours.
