🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm what you’re replacing

• Remove the plastic engine cover using your hands and a trim clip remover if needed.
• Understand the terms: a timing chain is a metal chain inside the engine; a serpentine belt is the external rubber belt that drives accessories.
• If you meant the external belt, stop here and tell me—serpentine belt replacement is much easier.

Step 2: Drain fluids

• Place a drain pan (10+ quart) under the radiator drain.
• Drain coolant and capture it for proper disposal.
• Drain engine oil using a socket set (8mm-24mm) and reinstall the drain plug.

Step 3: Remove intake and upper front components

• Remove intake ducting using a flathead screwdriver for hose clamps and a socket set (8mm-24mm) for fasteners.
• Label and unplug connectors as needed using a pick set carefully (don’t pry on the wires).

Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt and front accessory drive items

• Relieve belt tension using a serpentine belt tool (specialty), then slip the belt off.
• Remove necessary brackets/accessories from the front cover using a socket set (8mm-24mm) and wrench set (8mm-19mm).

Step 5: Remove the crank pulley (harmonic balancer)

• Use a 1/2" drive breaker bar with the correct socket from your socket set (8mm-24mm) to remove the crank bolt.
• Remove the pulley with a harmonic balancer puller kit (specialty).
• Do not hammer the pulley off.

Step 6: Remove the front timing cover

• Remove cover bolts using a socket set (8mm-24mm).
• Carefully break the seal using a plastic razor blade scraper and flathead screwdriver only at safe pry points.
• Clean all sealing surfaces using a plastic razor blade scraper; avoid gouging aluminum.

Step 7: Set engine to timing position and lock in place

• Rotate the engine by hand using a socket set (8mm-24mm) on the crank bolt (clockwise only).

Step 8: Replace chain, guides, and tensioners
