🔧 Impreza - Power Steering “Pump” Replacement (EPS System)

Your Impreza does not use a hydraulic power steering pump or power steering fluid. It uses EPS (Electric Power Steering), which is an electric motor and control unit that assist your steering—so there’s no pump to replace.

If your steering is heavy or you have a steering warning light, the fix is usually diagnosing the EPS system (battery/charging, fuses, wiring, or the EPS steering rack/motor), not swapping a pump.

Difficulty Level: Beginner (checks) / Advanced (steering rack replacement) | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours (checks)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car before checking connectors or fuses.
  • ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets and window auto-up/down until relearned.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands clear of the steering wheel and front wheels when cycling the ignition.
  • ⚠️ If you ever work near the steering column or airbag wiring, disconnect the battery and wait 10 minutes.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • Digital multimeter
  • OBD2 scan tool capable of reading ABS/EPS codes (specialty)
  • Fuse puller
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Trim clip tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low-profile mini fuses (assortment) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal cleaning brush - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, center the steering wheel, and set the parking brake.
  • Check the dash for a steering wheel warning light (EPS warning).
  • DTC means “diagnostic trouble code”—a stored fault code you read with a scan tool.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm it’s EPS (no pump/fluid)

  • Open the hood and look for a power steering fluid reservoir—your Impreza won’t have one because it’s electric assist.
  • If a shop told you “pump,” ask them if they actually meant the EPS steering gear (rack).

Step 2: Check the battery connections (common EPS cause)

  • Use a 10mm wrench to verify the battery terminals are tight (do not overtighten).
  • If you see white/green crusty buildup, disconnect the negative terminal with a 10mm wrench, clean with a battery terminal cleaning brush, then reconnect.
  • EPS is sensitive to low voltage.

Step 3: Quick battery/charging voltage check

  • Use a digital multimeter across the battery posts.
  • Engine OFF: roughly 12.4–12.7V is typical for a healthy, charged battery.
  • Engine ON: roughly 13.5–14.8V is typical if the alternator is charging.
  • If voltage is low, fix that first—EPS problems often disappear after battery/charging repair.

Step 4: Check relevant fuses

  • Use a flashlight and locate the interior and under-hood fuse panels (refer to the fuse diagram on the cover).
  • Use a fuse puller to remove and inspect fuses related to EPS/Power Steering and IG (ignition).
  • If a fuse is blown, replace it with the same amperage using the low-profile mini fuses (assortment).

Step 5: Read EPS/ABS trouble codes (this is the key step)

  • Plug in an OBD2 scan tool capable of reading ABS/EPS codes (specialty).
  • Read codes from ABS/VDC and EPS/Power Steering modules (not just “engine”).
  • Write down the exact code numbers and descriptions.

Step 6: Basic connector check (only if codes point to EPS)

  • Turn ignition OFF.
  • If you need to unplug any EPS connector, disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm wrench and wait 10 minutes.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect for water intrusion, bent pins, or loose connectors you can access without removing the steering rack.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the car and verify the steering assist returns and the warning light stays off.
  • Use the OBD2 scan tool to re-check codes after your repair/checks.
  • If the steering wheel is off-center or the car pulls after any steering/suspension work, get a 4-wheel alignment.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $150-$350 (diagnosis) or $1,500-$3,000+ (EPS steering rack replacement, if needed)

DIY Cost: $0-$40 (fuses/cleaning supplies) or $800-$2,000+ (rack assembly parts, if you go that far)

You Save: $150-$350+ by doing the basic checks yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1-2 hours for diagnosis.
