🔧 Crosstrek - Power Steering Pump Replacement

Your Crosstrek does not use a hydraulic power steering pump. It uses Electric Power Steering (EPS), which has no pump, no belt-driven pulley, and no power steering fluid to replace.

If you’re having a steering problem, the repair is usually diagnosis of the EPS system (fuses, wiring, torque/angle sensors, EPS motor/steering rack), not a pump swap.

Difficulty Level: Beginner (checks) / Advanced (rack replacement) | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours (checks) / 3-6 hours (steering rack)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands if wheels are off the ground.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands clear of the steering wheel if someone turns it during checks.
  • ⚠️ If working near the steering column/airbag wiring, disconnect the battery and wait 10 minutes.
  • ⚠️ Do not unplug EPS connectors with the key ON.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • OBD2 scan tool with EPS/ABS capability (specialty)
  • Digital multimeter (specialty)
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench (10–200 Nm range)
  • Trim clip tool
  • Flashlight
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • No power steering pump used on this Crosstrek - Qty: 0
  • EPS main fuse (if failed) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal cleaning kit (if needed) - Qty: 1
  • Steering rack with EPS motor (if diagnosed bad) - Qty: 1
  • Outer tie rod ends (recommended if rack is replaced) - Qty: 2
  • Front subframe/steering hardware (one-time-use if required) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key.
  • If you will unplug EPS connectors: disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket, then wait 10 minutes.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm it’s an EPS issue (not something else)

  • Start the engine and slowly turn the steering wheel left/right while parked.
  • Note what you feel: heavy steering, pulsing, grinding, or a warning light.
  • Heavy steering at idle often points to EPS power.

Step 2: Check for EPS warning lights and pull codes

  • Plug in an OBD2 scan tool with EPS/ABS capability (specialty). (This is a reader that can talk to the steering computer, not just the engine.)
  • Scan EPS and ABS/VDC modules for trouble codes and write them down.
  • If your scan tool shows “low voltage” type codes, go to the battery/charging checks next.

Step 3: Check battery terminals and main grounds (common cause)

  • With ignition OFF, open the hood and inspect battery terminals for white/green corrosion.
  • Use a 10mm socket to ensure terminals are tight (snug, not over-tight).
  • If dirty, clean using a battery terminal cleaning kit, then re-test.

Step 4: Check EPS fuses

  • Locate the under-hood fuse box and the cabin fuse panel.
  • Use a flashlight and inspect the EPS-related fuses for a blown element.
  • If you find a blown fuse, replace it with the correct rated EPS main fuse (same amperage).
  • If the replacement fuse blows again, stop—there’s a short that needs diagnosis before parts replacement.

Step 5: Voltage check (only if you have a multimeter)

  • Use a digital multimeter (specialty) to measure battery voltage at the battery posts.
  • Engine OFF: you typically want around 12.4–12.7V; engine running: typically ~13.5–14.7V.
  • Low voltage can make EPS go heavy or set warning lights.

Step 6: If diagnosis points to the steering rack/EPS motor

  • At this point the repair is usually steering rack replacement, which is an advanced job and requires an alignment afterward.
  • Some EPS faults also require a scan tool function to clear codes and perform steering angle/torque sensor learning after repairs.
  • If you want, I can walk you through rack replacement steps, but I need your exact symptom and any EPS/ABS codes first.

✅ After Repair

  • Clear EPS/ABS codes using an OBD2 scan tool with EPS/ABS capability (specialty), then re-scan to confirm they don’t return.
  • Test drive in a safe area: verify normal steering assist and no warning lights.
  • If the rack or tie rods were replaced: get a 4-wheel alignment immediately.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $150-$300 (diagnosis) / $1,400-$2,800 (steering rack replacement parts + labor + alignment)

DIY Cost: $0-$50 (checks/fuse/terminal cleaning) / $600-$1,600 (rack + related parts, alignment extra)

You Save: $100-$1,200 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1-5 hours.

  • What symptom do you have: heavy steering, noise, pulling, or an EPS/ABS light?
  • Do you have any trouble codes from the scan (even just the code numbers)?
