🔧 Pathfinder - Accessory Drive Belt Replacement (No Timing Belt)
Your Pathfinder’s 3.5L V6 uses a timing chain (internal) and does not have a timing belt to replace on a maintenance schedule. Most people asking for a “timing belt” on this engine actually mean the accessory/serpentine drive belt that runs the alternator and A/C.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Work on a cool engine; keep hands clear of pulleys.
- 🧰 Support your Pathfinder with jack stands if you lift it—never rely on a jack alone.
- 🔌 No battery disconnect is required for this belt replacement, but keep the key away so nobody starts it.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- 📸 Take a photo of the belt routing if you can see it, or look for the belt-routing sticker under the hood.
- “Tensioner” = spring-loaded arm that tightens the belt.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the right-front corner (if needed for access)
- Use 17mm socket and breaker bar to slightly loosen the right-front wheel lug nuts.
- Use floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift at the front right jack point.
- Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove the wheel with the 17mm socket.
Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield / access panel
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet (3/8") to remove any small bolts.
- Set the panel and hardware aside in order.
Step 3: Locate the belt tensioner
- Use a flashlight to find the belt and the spring-loaded tensioner arm.
- Confirm the belt path around the pulleys before removing anything.
Step 4: Release belt tension
- Place a 14mm socket on the tensioner’s hex boss/bolt head.
- Use a long-handled ratchet (3/8") to rotate the tensioner and relieve tension (it will feel springy).
- While holding the tensioner rotated, slip the belt off the easiest-to-reach top pulley.
- Slowly let the tensioner return to rest. Don’t let it snap back.
Step 5: Remove the old belt and compare
- Pull the belt out from all pulleys by hand.
- Compare the old and new belt length/rib count before installing.
Step 6: Install the new belt (route first, tension last)
- Route the new belt around all pulleys except one easy pulley (leave that one for last).
- Make sure every rib sits fully in each pulley groove (no ribs hanging off an edge).
- Use the 14mm socket and long-handled ratchet (3/8") to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slip the belt onto the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
Step 7: Reinstall the splash shield and wheel
- Reinstall the splash shield using the 10mm socket, ratchet (3/8"), and the plastic clips (press clips in by hand).
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread lug nuts.
- Lower your Pathfinder off the stands using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench (20–200 ft-lbs range): Torque to 133 Nm (98 ft-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- 🔍 Before starting, re-check the belt is seated on every pulley groove.
- 🚗 Start the engine and watch the belt for 20–30 seconds—no wobble, squeal, or walking off a pulley.
- 🛑 If you hear squealing, shut it off and re-check routing and rib alignment.
