🔧 MX-5 Miata - Power Steering System Service (No Pump)

Your MX-5 Miata uses Electric Power Steering (EPS), so it does not have a hydraulic power steering pump, belt, or fluid to replace. If your steering is heavy or you have a steering warning light, the issue is usually electrical (battery/charging, fuses, wiring) or the EPS steering rack/motor.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate (checks) / Advanced (rack replacement) | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours (checks) / 5-8 hours (rack)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and use jack stands—never rely on a jack.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal before unplugging EPS/steering connectors.
  • ⚠️ Do not rotate the steering wheel with the steering shaft disconnected; it can damage the clock spring (airbag steering coil).
  • ⚠️ If an airbag/SRS light is on, avoid probing yellow connectors; use proper procedures.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Digital multimeter
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • 19mm socket
  • 21mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 1/2" breaker bar
  • Torque wrench (10-200 Nm range)
  • Flat trim tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Tie-rod end puller (specialty)
  • OBD2 scan tool with Mazda EPS/SAS functions (specialty)
  • Paint marker

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • No parts needed (EPS basic checks) - Qty: 0
  • EPS steering rack assembly (steering gear with motor) - Qty: 1
  • Outer tie rod end cotter pin - Qty: 2
  • Steering rack mounting bolts/nuts (if specified one-time-use) - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Center the steering wheel and keep the front wheels pointed straight.
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
  • If you’re doing rack replacement: plan for a professional alignment afterward.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm it’s an EPS issue (no pump exists)

  • Turn ignition ON and look for a steering wheel warning light in the cluster.
  • If steering is heavy mainly at idle/low speed, EPS may be reducing assist due to low voltage.

Step 2: Check battery and charging (most common EPS cause)

  • Use a digital multimeter at the battery terminals.
  • Engine OFF: battery should be around the mid-12V range; if it’s very low, EPS may disable.
  • Engine ON: charging voltage should rise; if it does not, charging system faults can trigger EPS problems.
  • Low voltage = weird steering assist.

Step 3: Check EPS-related fuses and connectors

  • Use a flat trim tool to open the fuse access panels.
  • Inspect EPS/POWER STEERING labeled fuses (and any main fuses feeding EPS) for damage.
  • Check for loose/corroded battery terminals: use a 10mm socket to verify clamp tightness.

Step 4: Scan for EPS codes (best next step)

  • Connect an OBD2 scan tool with Mazda EPS/SAS functions (specialty) and read EPS/PCM/ABS codes.
  • Write down codes exactly (example format: Cxxxx or Uxxxx). This tells you whether the problem is voltage, torque sensor, motor, or communication.

Step 5: If replacing the EPS steering rack, raise and secure the front

  • Loosen front lug nuts with a 21mm socket and breaker bar (do not remove yet).
  • Lift the front with a floor jack and support with jack stands at the proper jack points.
  • Remove wheels using a 21mm socket.
  • Torque to OEM specification when reinstalling lug nuts.

Step 6: Disconnect tie rod ends from the knuckles

  • Remove the tie-rod end cotter pin using needle-nose pliers.
  • Remove the tie-rod end nut using a 17mm socket or 19mm socket (size may vary by hardware).
  • Separate the joint using a tie-rod end puller (specialty) (this tool presses the stud out without hammering).
  • Count turns if reusing tie rods.

Step 7: Disconnect steering shaft from the rack input

  • Inside the cabin (or at the intermediate shaft area), mark the relationship between the shaft and coupler using a paint marker.
  • Remove the pinch bolt using the appropriate 12mm socket or 14mm socket (hardware can vary).
  • Slide the shaft off the rack input carefully.
  • Torque to OEM specification on reassembly.

Step 8: Unplug EPS electrical connectors

  • Verify the negative battery cable is disconnected.
  • Unplug EPS motor/torque sensor connectors by releasing locks using a flat trim tool (do not pry hard).
  • Inspect for water intrusion or bent pins.

Step 9: Remove the rack mounting hardware and rack

  • Support the rack and remove mounting bolts/nuts using a 14mm socket and 17mm socket (sizes vary by mount points).
  • Work the rack out carefully without stressing wiring.
  • Torque to OEM specification on all rack mount fasteners.

Step 10: Install the replacement rack and reassemble

  • Install the new rack in position and hand-start all mounting fasteners using a ratchet.
  • Reconnect EPS connectors firmly until they click.
  • Reconnect the steering shaft using your paint marker alignment marks; install pinch bolt and torque to OEM specification.
  • Reconnect tie-rod ends, install nuts, and install new cotter pins; torque to OEM specification.
  • Reinstall wheels; torque to OEM specification.

✅ After Repair

  • Reconnect the battery using a 10mm socket.
  • Turn ignition ON and confirm the EPS warning light goes out.
  • Use the OBD2 scan tool with Mazda EPS/SAS functions (specialty) to clear codes and perform any required steering angle sensor (SAS) learning if prompted.
  • Get a front-end alignment immediately after rack/tie-rod work.
  • Road test at low speed first, then normal speeds, checking for pull or off-center steering.
