2018 Mazda CX-9 Power Steering Pump Replacement? EPAS Diagnosis & No-Pump Fix Guide
Confirm the electric power steering setup, scan EPAS codes, and check battery, fuses, and rack wiring step-by-step

🔧 CX-9 - Power Steering Pump Replacement
Your CX-9 does not use a hydraulic power steering pump. It uses Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS), where an electric motor and control module assist steering at the rack—so there’s no pump, no belt-driven unit, and no power steering fluid to replace.
What we can do is confirm the EPAS setup and walk through the right next steps based on your symptom.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Keep hands/tools away from the radiator fan area with ignition ON.
- 🛑 If lifting the front end, support your CX-9 with jack stands on solid points—never rely on a jack alone.
- 🛑 Avoid unplugging steering/airbag-area connectors with the battery connected.
- 🛑 Battery disconnect is recommended if you unplug EPAS connectors: remove negative terminal with a 10mm wrench.
🔧 Required Tools

- Digital multimeter
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Mechanic gloves
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- No power steering pump required (EPAS system) - Qty: 0
- Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
- Assorted automotive fuses (low-profile mini) - Qty: 1 kit
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and use wheel chocks.
- Turn the steering wheel straight ahead and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Quick questions (so I point you to the right fix):
- Do you have a steering wheel warning light on the dash?
- Is the problem hard steering, noise/clunk, or fluid leak (from under the car)?
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm there is no pump or fluid reservoir
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to look for a power steering fluid reservoir.
- On your CX-9, you should not find a PS reservoir or PS belt-driven pump—this confirms EPAS.
Step 2: Check battery condition and connections
- Inspect battery terminals for looseness/corrosion; use a 10mm wrench to ensure terminals are snug.
- Use a digital multimeter to measure battery voltage:
- Engine OFF: typically around 12.4–12.7V on a healthy battery.
- Engine running: typically around 13.5–14.8V (charging system working).
- Low voltage can cause heavy steering.
Step 3: Scan for EPAS trouble codes
- Plug in an OBD2 scan tool with Mazda EPAS code access (specialty).
- Read codes from the steering/EPAS module and write down:
- The code numbers
- Any “current” vs “history” status
- Clear codes only after recording them.
Step 4: Inspect EPAS-related fuses
- Turn ignition OFF.
- Use a trim clip remover as needed to access fuse box covers (do not pry with metal tools).
- Inspect steering/EPAS-related fuses visually and replace any blown fuse with an equal rating.
Step 5: Inspect steering rack electrical connector (basic check)
- Safely raise the front if needed using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Use a flashlight to locate the steering rack area and look for:
- Damaged wiring
- Loose connectors
- Water intrusion or heavy corrosion
- If you must unplug a connector, disconnect the battery negative first using a 10mm wrench, then re-connect firmly.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and turn the wheel slowly lock-to-lock to confirm assist feels normal.
- Re-scan with the OBD2 scan tool and confirm no EPAS codes return.
- Road test at low speed first (parking lot), then normal roads.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $150–$350 (diagnosis) or $1,400–$2,800 (if steering rack/EPAS assembly replacement is required)
DIY Cost: $0–$50 (basic checks/fuses/terminal service) or $900–$2,000 (if rack replacement is needed)
You Save: $150–$800+ by doing basic diagnosis yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0–2.0 hours for diagnosis.
