🔧 Expedition - Power Steering Pump Replacement (Not Applicable)

Your Expedition uses electric power steering (EPAS), so it does not have a hydraulic power steering pump, pulley, reservoir, or power steering fluid to replace like older systems.

The “power steering” components that can be replaced are typically the EPAS steering gear (rack), related wiring/connectors, or (less commonly) the steering column components—depending on the fault.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging EPAS connectors.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Keep the steering wheel centered and do not let it free-spin with the intermediate shaft disconnected (it can damage the clockspring).
  • ⚠️ A front-end alignment is required after steering gear work.
  • ⚠️ Many EPAS repairs require a scan tool to run steering angle/center calibration.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (20-250 ft-lbs)
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs)
  • Socket set (8mm-24mm)
  • Wrench set (10mm-24mm)
  • Torx bit set (T20-T50)
  • Pry bar
  • Tie rod end puller (specialty)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Paint marker
  • Scan tool with Ford EPAS functions (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • EPAS steering gear (steering rack) assembly - Qty: 1
  • Outer tie rod ends - Qty: 2 (Recommended with rack replacement)
  • Steering gear mounting bolts - Qty: 1 set (If specified as one-time-use)
  • Front subframe/underbody fasteners & clips assortment - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, straighten the front wheels, and set the parking brake.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the steering wheel “center” position.
  • Disconnect the battery using a 10mm socket on the negative terminal and isolate the cable so it can’t spring back.
  • Plan for calibration: you’ll typically need steering angle/center learn after installation using a capable scan tool.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm what you’re actually replacing

  • Your Expedition has no power steering pump. If a shop/online guide mentions a “pump,” they may mean the EPAS steering gear.
  • Before teardown, check for warning messages and codes with a scan tool with Ford EPAS functions (specialty).
  • Tell me the exact dash message/code.

Step 2: Raise and support the front end

  • Chock rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove front wheels using the correct lug nut socket and a breaker bar.

Step 3: Remove underbody shields for access

  • Remove the front splash shields/skid plates using a socket set (8mm-24mm) and trim clip removal tool.
  • Keep clips/bolts organized by location.

Step 4: Disconnect outer tie rod ends from knuckles

  • Remove the tie rod end nut using the appropriate socket or wrench set (10mm-24mm).
  • Separate the joint using a tie rod end puller (specialty) (a puller is a tool that presses the joint apart without hammer damage).
  • Count turns if you remove tie rod ends from the inner rods (helps get it close for alignment).

Step 5: Disconnect the steering intermediate shaft

  • Inside/at the lower shaft area, mark the relationship of the shaft to the gear input using a paint marker.
  • Remove the pinch bolt using the correct socket and ratchet.
  • Slide the intermediate shaft off carefully; do not rotate the steering wheel.

Step 6: Unplug EPAS electrical connectors

  • Locate the steering gear electrical connector(s) and release locks using a trim clip removal tool if needed.
  • Disconnect connector(s) fully and secure harness away from the work area.

Step 7: Remove steering gear mounting fasteners

  • Support the steering gear as you remove fasteners using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) or by hand with a helper.
  • Remove steering gear mounting bolts using a breaker bar and socket set (8mm-24mm).
  • Install torque is application-specific; when reassembling, use a torque wrench and Torque to the OEM spec for your rack mounting bolts.

Step 8: Remove the steering gear from the vehicle

  • Work the steering gear out through the opening available (clearances vary with 4WD components and skid plates).
  • Use a pry bar only gently if needed to guide it free.

Step 9: Install the new steering gear and reconnect everything

  • Position the new steering gear and start mounting bolts by hand using the correct socket.
  • Tighten mounting bolts using a torque wrench to Torque to the OEM spec.
  • Reconnect EPAS connector(s) until fully seated and locked.
  • Reconnect intermediate shaft aligned to your paint marks; install pinch bolt and use a torque wrench to Torque to the OEM spec.
  • Reconnect tie rod ends and tighten using a torque wrench to Torque to the OEM spec.

Step 10: Reinstall shields and wheels

  • Reinstall underbody shields using a socket set (8mm-24mm) and trim clip removal tool.
  • Install wheels and tighten lug nuts using a torque wrench to Torque to the OEM spec.
  • Lower the vehicle from jack stands using a floor jack.

Step 11: Restore power and perform EPAS calibration

  • Reconnect the battery using a 10mm socket.
  • Run required EPAS routines using a scan tool with Ford EPAS functions (specialty) (typically steering angle/center calibration).
  • If the steering wheel is off-center after, do not “eyeball adjust”—get an alignment.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and verify normal steering assist with no warning messages.
  • Scan for codes using a scan tool with Ford EPAS functions (specialty) and confirm none return.
  • Get a professional 4-wheel alignment as soon as possible.
  • Road test at low speed first; confirm no clunks, pulls, or binding.
