🔧 Traverse - Timing Belt Replacement (Not Applicable) / Drive Belt Replacement

Your Traverse’s 3.6L engine does not have a timing belt. It uses a timing chain inside the engine, so there is no timing belt service to “replace.”

If what you want is the common belt people see and replace, that’s the serpentine/drive belt—and I can walk you through that DIY below.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before working near the radiator/engine.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands, hair, and clothing away from pulleys; do not start the engine during installation.
  • ⚠️ If lifting the vehicle, use jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this belt job; keep the key away from the vehicle.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive breaker bar
  • 15mm socket
  • Serpentine belt removal tool (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine/drive belt - Qty: 1
  • Belt tensioner assembly - Qty: 1 (optional if noisy/weak)
  • Idler pulley - Qty: 1 (optional if noisy/rough)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, set the parking brake, and open the hood.
  • Find the belt routing diagram sticker (often on the radiator support). If you don’t see one, use your phone to take a clear photo of the belt routing.
  • If access is tight from above, raise the front of your Traverse using a floor jack, set it on jack stands, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt tensioner

  • Use a flashlight to locate the belt tensioner (a spring-loaded arm with a pulley).
  • Uncommon term: The tensioner is a spring mechanism that keeps the belt tight automatically.
  • Identify the tool point on the tensioner (commonly a bolt head you can turn with a socket).

Step 2: Release belt tension

  • Install a 15mm socket on a 3/8" drive ratchet (or use a serpentine belt removal tool (specialty) for better reach).
  • Rotate the tensioner smoothly to relieve tension (it will feel strong; that’s normal).
  • While holding the tensioner rotated, slide the belt off one easy-to-reach pulley.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its rest position (don’t let it snap back).
  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys by hand.
  • Check the belt for cracks, fraying, missing ribs, or shiny “glazed” spots.

Step 4: Check pulleys for noise or wobble

  • Spin the tensioner pulley and idler pulley by hand (engine off). They should feel smooth and quiet.
  • If a pulley feels rough, sounds gritty, or wobbles, replace that component before installing the new belt.
  • Uncommon term: An idler pulley is a free-spinning guide pulley that routes the belt.

Step 5: Route the new belt

  • Compare the new belt to the old one (same length/rib count).
  • Route the belt around the pulleys using the routing sticker/photo, leaving one easier pulley for last.
  • Make sure the belt ribs sit fully in the grooves on ribbed pulleys; the smooth belt side rides on smooth pulleys.
  • If one rib is off, it will shred.

Step 6: Re-apply tension and finish installation

  • Use the 15mm socket with the 3/8" drive ratchet (or serpentine belt removal tool (specialty)) to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the last pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the belt is centered on every pulley.

Step 7: Recheck before starting

  • Remove all tools from the engine bay.
  • Do one final routing check against your photo/routing sticker.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for 15–30 seconds; it should run smoothly without wandering.
  • Listen for squeal or chirp. If noise persists, the tensioner or a pulley bearing is often the cause.
  • Take a short drive, then re-check belt alignment.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$300 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $35-$120 (parts only)

You Save: $85-$180 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.

One quick check so I don’t steer you wrong: Are you trying to replace the visible serpentine/drive belt, or are you having a timing chain symptom (cold-start rattle, cam/crank codes, misfires)?
