Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

• Open the fuel door by hand.
• Use a flashlight to confirm if you have a twist-off cap or a capless inlet.

Step 2A: Replace a twist-off fuel cap (if equipped)

• Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
• Turn the old cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes off.
• Use a clean lint-free towel to wipe the filler neck sealing surface (the flat area the cap presses against).
• Install the new cap and turn it clockwise by hand until it is fully seated and clicks (if it’s a ratcheting cap).
• Tip: Keep turning until it clicks 1–3 times.
