🔧 Civic - Air Intake Sensor Replacement (No MAF Sensor Equipped)

Your Civic’s 2.0L does not use a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. It uses a MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure) to measure engine load instead.

So the “MAF replacement” on your Civic is typically replacing the MAP sensor on the intake manifold (or cleaning it if it’s just dirty).

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Let the engine cool so you don’t burn your hands.
  • 🔌 If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets.
  • ⚠️ Don’t pull on wiring—press the connector tab and remove it gently.
  • 🧼 Keep dirt out of the intake manifold opening.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4")
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range Nm)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • MAP sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAP sensor O-ring (if not included with sensor) - Qty: 1
  • Electrical contact cleaner (safe for sensors) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Open the hood and remove any loose items around the engine cover area.
  • If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the MAP sensor

  • The MAP sensor is mounted on the intake manifold and has an electrical connector plugged into it.
  • MAP sensor measures pressure inside the manifold.

Step 2: Unplug the electrical connector

  • Press the connector locking tab with your thumb.
  • If it’s stuck, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help lift the tab while pulling the connector straight off.
  • Wiggle gently—don’t yank the wires.

Step 3: Remove the MAP sensor mounting bolt(s)

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension to remove the sensor bolt(s).
  • Set the bolt(s) aside where they won’t fall into the engine bay.

Step 4: Remove the sensor

  • Pull the sensor straight out by hand.
  • If it feels stuck, gently twist it while pulling.
  • Make sure the old O-ring comes out with the sensor and isn’t stuck in the manifold.

Step 5: Prep the new sensor

  • If the new sensor has a new O-ring, lightly coat the O-ring with a tiny bit of clean engine oil using a gloved finger.
  • If reusing the O-ring (not ideal), inspect it for cracks or flattening and replace if damaged.

Step 6: Install the new MAP sensor

  • Push the sensor straight into place by hand until it seats fully.
  • Install the bolt(s) by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten using a 10mm socket, then finish with a torque wrench: Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
  • Small bolts strip easily—use the torque wrench.

Step 7: Reconnect the connector

  • Push the connector on until it clicks.
  • Optional: If the connector looked dirty/corroded, spray a small amount of electrical contact cleaner into the connector, let it dry, then reconnect.

Step 8: Reconnect the battery (if disconnected)

  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the negative battery terminal.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 2–3 minutes.
  • Listen for rough idle and check that the check engine light stays off.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
  • If the check engine light stays on, the code may need to be cleared with a scan tool.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $180-$350 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $45-$140 (parts only)

You Save: $135-$210 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
