Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm it’s a timing chain (not a belt)

• Use a flashlight to look at the front/side of the engine for any wide rubber “timing belt” cover—your CX-5 won’t have one.
• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the plastic engine cover if equipped (it may also pull straight up depending on clips).
• You’ll see external accessory belts, but the timing chain itself is internal behind a metal cover—this is normal.

• Use a clean shop rag to wipe the dipstick, reinsert, then recheck level.
