Follow these steps in order:

- Plug in an OBD2 scan tool and read codes.
- Common timing-related codes are often cam/crank correlation or cam position performance.
- Write down any codes and freeze-frame data (the conditions when the code set).
Step 2: Listen for timing chain/tensioner noise
- With the hood open, do a cold start and listen near the front of the engine.
- Use a mechanicās stethoscope (itās a listening probe for pinpointing noises) to compare sound at the front timing cover area versus the alternator/belt area.
- Sharp rattle on cold start matters most.
Step 3: Check the basics that mimic timing issues
- Check oil level on the dipstick (low oil can cause chain/tensioner noise).
- If oil is dirty/unknown age, plan an oil change using 0W-20 full synthetic and a new filter (wrong/old oil can affect chain tensioners).
