🔧 Escape - Timing Belt Replacement

Your Escape’s 2.0L turbo engine does not use a timing belt. It uses a timing chain, which is lubricated by engine oil and is not a normal scheduled “belt replacement” item.

If you meant the belt you can actually see on the side of the engine, that’s the accessory/serpentine belt (it drives the alternator, A/C, etc.).

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on a cold engine; the turbo area gets extremely hot.
  • 🛑 Keep fingers and tools away from pulleys while releasing the tensioner.
  • 🛑 If you remove any electrical connectors near the belt area, disconnect the battery negative terminal first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive long handle breaker bar
  • 10mm socket
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Accessory drive belt (serpentine belt) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Find or take a photo of the belt routing diagram (often on a sticker in the engine bay). If you can’t find it, take a clear photo of the current routing before removal.
  • “Tensioner” = spring-loaded arm that keeps belt tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine appearance cover (if equipped)

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any retaining nuts/bolts (some covers pull up from grommets).
  • Lift the cover off and set it aside.

Step 2: Locate the belt tensioner

  • Use a flashlight and look at the front/side of the engine where the belt runs around multiple pulleys.
  • Find the tensioner (a pulley on a spring-loaded arm). Many have a square hole for a ratchet drive.

Step 3: Relieve belt tension

  • Insert a 3/8" drive ratchet or 3/8" drive breaker bar into the tensioner’s square drive.
  • Rotate the tensioner smoothly to release tension (you’ll feel strong spring force).
  • Use a breaker bar for easier leverage.

Step 4: Remove the old belt

  • While holding the tensioner released with the 3/8" breaker bar, slip the belt off one easy-to-reach upper pulley.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its rest position (don’t let it snap back).
  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys by hand.

Step 5: Install the new belt

  • Route the new belt around all pulleys following the belt-routing diagram/photo, leaving one upper pulley for last.
  • Use the 3/8" breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again, then slip the belt onto the last pulley.
  • Release the tensioner slowly and confirm the belt sits fully in every pulley groove.

Step 6: Reinstall the engine cover

  • Reinstall the cover and tighten fasteners using the 10mm socket.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for 20–30 seconds. It should run smoothly with no wobble or squeal.
  • Turn the A/C on and verify no belt noise changes.
  • If you hear chirping/squeal, shut it off and re-check belt routing and that it’s seated in all grooves.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $150-$300 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$80 (parts only)

You Save: $120-$220 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.

Quick question so I guide you correctly: Did you mean the timing chain (internal, major job) or the visible accessory/serpentine belt?
