2013-2015 Ford Escape Timing Belt vs Timing Chain: How to Diagnose & Replace the 2.0L EcoBoost Chain (Engine: Inline 4 2.0L)
Step-by-step timing chain service with required tools, parts list, safety tips, and post-repair checks for noise/cam-crank codes for 2013, 2014, 2015
🔧 Escape - Timing Belt Replacement (Correction: Timing Chain Service)
Your Escape’s 2.0L EcoBoost uses a timing chain, not a timing belt—so there isn’t a routine “timing belt replacement” interval like some engines. If you’re chasing a noise, a check-engine light, or cam/crank correlation codes, that’s when timing chain inspection/replacement becomes relevant.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 8-14 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Support the engine before removing any engine mount; the engine can drop suddenly.
- 🛑 Work only on a cold engine; coolant and turbo/engine parts can cause burns.
- 🛑 Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental cranking.
- 🛑 Keep fingers clear of the serpentine belt path and pulleys.
- 🛑 This job requires precise engine timing; if timing is set wrong, engine damage can occur.

- Engine oil (spec for your Escape) - Qty: 6 quarts
- Oil filter - Qty: 1
- Engine coolant (Motorcraft-type yellow/orange equivalent) - Qty: 2-3 gallons premix
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Raise the front of your Escape with a floor jack and support it on jack stands.
- Plan to drain coolant and change oil after resealing the front cover.
- Take photos of bolt locations as you go.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm you’re servicing the timing chain
- Open the hood and remove the top engine cover by pulling upward (use gloves for grip).
- There is no external timing belt cover/belt service path on your Escape’s 2.0L—timing is driven by an internal chain behind the front cover.
- If you’re doing this due to a code/noise, plan to scan first after repair; you’ll want to verify cam/crank correlation afterward.
Step 2: Remove access items (wheel well and underbody)
- Remove the right-front wheel using a 19mm socket.
- Remove the right-front inner fender liner clips/screws using a trim clip remover and Torx bit set.
- Remove the lower splash shield using a socket set.
Step 3: Drain coolant and prepare for engine support
- Place a drain pan under the radiator drain and drain the coolant (use gloves and safety glasses).
- Install the engine support bar (specialty) across the strut towers and tension it to hold engine weight.
Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt and crank pulley
- Release belt tension with a breaker bar 1/2" on the tensioner and slip the belt off.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt using a socket set and breaker bar 1/2".
- Remove the crank pulley using a harmonic balancer puller kit (specialty).
- Do not pry the pulley off.
Step 5: Remove the right-side engine mount (engine must be supported)
- With the engine held by the engine support bar (specialty), remove the right engine mount fasteners using a socket set.
- Set the mount aside and keep bolts grouped by location.
Step 6: Set cylinder #1 to TDC and install timing locks
- Rotate the engine to the correct timing position using a socket set on the crank (turn clockwise only).
- Install the Ford-compatible timing locking tool kit for 2.0L EcoBoost (specialty) to lock the crank and cams per tool instructions.
- This locking step is what prevents the cams from “springing” out of time when the chain is removed.
Step 7: Remove valve cover and front cover
- Remove ignition coil/related harness retainers as needed using a socket set and Torx bit set.
- Remove the valve cover bolts using a socket set and lift the valve cover off.
- Remove the front cover fasteners using a socket set and Torx bit set, then carefully separate the cover using a plastic gasket scraper.
- Don’t gouge the aluminum sealing surface.
Step 8: Replace the timing chain, guides, and tensioner
- With the timing still locked, remove the chain tensioner and guides using a socket set.
- Remove the old chain and install the new chain from the timing chain kit in the same routing.
- Install new guides and the new tensioner using a torque wrench and torque angle gauge (specialty).
- Torque to Ford specification from the service manual (fasteners vary by location and many are torque-to-yield/angle-tightened).
Step 9: Reseal and reinstall front cover and valve cover
- Clean all mating surfaces using a plastic gasket scraper and shop rags.
- Install the new front crankshaft seal and front cover gasket/seals from the front cover gasket set.
- Apply RTV silicone sealant only at the required seam joints (per the gasket kit instructions).
- Install the front cover and tighten bolts using a torque wrench in an even pattern. Torque to Ford specification from the service manual.
- Install the valve cover with a new valve cover gasket and tighten using a torque wrench. Torque to Ford specification from the service manual.
Step 10: Reinstall crank pulley, mount, belt, and refill fluids
- Install the crank pulley and a new crankshaft pulley bolt using a torque wrench and torque angle gauge (specialty). Torque to Ford specification from the service manual.
- Reinstall the right engine mount using a torque wrench. Torque to Ford specification from the service manual.
- Reinstall the serpentine belt using a breaker bar 1/2".
- Refill coolant using a funnel and refill engine oil (and replace the oil filter).
Step 11: Remove timing tools and hand-rotate to verify timing
- Remove the timing locking tools using the Ford-compatible timing locking tool kit for 2.0L EcoBoost (specialty).
- Hand-rotate the engine at least two full turns clockwise using a socket set on the crank.
- Recheck that timing lock positions line up correctly (per the tool kit instructions).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle; listen for abnormal rattles from the timing cover area.
- Check carefully for oil leaks at the front cover and valve cover.
- Bleed air from the cooling system by running to operating temp and topping off coolant as needed.
- If the check-engine light was on, scan and confirm cam/crank correlation codes do not return.
- Recheck fluid levels after the first drive.
