🔧 Juke - Timing Belt Replacement

Important: your Juke’s 1.6L engine uses a timing chain, not a timing belt. There is no normal “timing belt replacement” service on this engine.

Assumption (so you can keep moving today): you meant the engine accessory/serpentine drive belt (the belt that runs the alternator/A/C). Below is the correct DIY for that belt.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Work on a cool engine; belts and pulleys can burn you.
  • 🧯 Keep hands/clothes clear of pulleys; never run the engine with fingers near the belt.
  • 🔋 No battery disconnect is required, but keep the key off and the car in neutral with the parking brake set.
  • 🧱 If you raise the car, support it with jack stands (never the jack alone).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Breaker bar 3/8"
  • 14mm combination wrench
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • Trim clip remover
  • Flashlight
  • Torque wrench (10–150 ft-lb range)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Accessory drive belt (serpentine belt) - Qty: 1
  • Plastic undertray clips - Qty: 4

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock a rear wheel.
  • 📸 Take a quick photo of the belt routing (or sketch it) before removal.
  • ⬆️ If needed for access, raise the front and set it securely on jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) to safely support the front.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the undertray bolts.
  • Use a trim clip remover to pop out any plastic clips.

Step 2: Locate the belt tensioner

  • Use a flashlight to find the spring-loaded belt tensioner near the front of the engine.
  • A tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight automatically.

Step 3: Release belt tension

  • Place a 14mm combination wrench or 14mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet on the tensioner’s hex.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve tension, then slide the belt off one easy pulley (usually the alternator).
  • Move slowly; the tensioner is spring-loaded.

Step 4: Remove the old belt

  • With tension released, pull the belt out and snake it clear of all pulleys by hand.
  • Inspect pulleys for wobble or grinding by spinning them by hand (engine off).

Step 5: Install the new belt (route it correctly)

  • Route the new belt around the pulleys the same way as your photo/sketch.
  • Leave one upper pulley for last (easiest to slip on).
  • Rotate the tensioner again using the 14mm combination wrench, slip the belt onto the last pulley, then gently release the tensioner.
  • Make sure the belt ribs sit fully in the pulley grooves (no rib hanging off).

Step 6: Reinstall the splash shield (if removed)

  • Reinstall the undertray using the 10mm socket and replace any broken clips with new ones.
  • If you removed a wheel for access, install lug nuts and Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench (10–150 ft-lb range).

✅ After Repair

  • 👀 Before starting, do a final visual check: belt centered on every pulley.
  • 🔊 Start the engine and let it idle 30–60 seconds. Listen for squeal, slapping, or chirping.
  • 🛑 Shut the engine off and re-check belt alignment one more time.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
