🔧 Wrangler - Cabin Air Filter Service
Your Wrangler (JK) did not come with a factory-installed cabin air filter, so there usually isn’t a filter you can “change” like on many other vehicles. What you can do is (1) confirm whether an aftermarket cabin-filter retrofit was added, and (2) clean the HVAC fresh-air intake area to reduce odors and debris.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
- ⚠️ If you use cleaner, ventilate well and avoid spraying into electrical connectors.
- ⚠️ Wear eye protection; debris can fall when panels move.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Move the passenger seat back for more room.
- Have a trash bag ready; small leaves/dust may fall.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm whether your Wrangler has a retrofit cabin filter
- Use a flashlight and look under/behind the glove box on the passenger side.
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently lower any small under-dash panel if it blocks your view.
- Look for a small rectangular filter door/slot on the HVAC housing (plastic box). If you see a door, you likely have a retrofit kit.
Step 2A: If you DO have a filter door, remove the old cabin filter
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove any screws holding the filter door (some kits use clips instead of screws).
- Pull the filter straight out by hand.
- Note the airflow direction arrow on the old filter so the new one goes in the same way.
- Tip: Take a quick photo first.
Step 3A: Install the new cabin filter (retrofit-equipped Wrangler)
- Slide the new filter into the slot by hand, matching the airflow arrow direction.
- Reinstall the filter door using the Phillips #2 screwdriver if screws were used.
- Reinstall any under-dash panel you lowered using the trim removal tool (plastic).
Step 2B: If you DO NOT have a filter door, clean the HVAC intake area instead (factory setup)
- Open the hood.
- Use a flashlight to locate the fresh-air intake area at the base of the windshield (cowl area).
- Use the shop vacuum with crevice tool to remove leaves, sand, and debris from the intake openings and surrounding area.
- If you’re using cleaner, follow the can directions and apply HVAC deodorizer / evaporator cleaner (aerosol) as directed (typically with the blower running). Use nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
Step 3B: Run the HVAC to clear out residue (factory setup)
- Start the engine and set HVAC to fresh air (recirculation OFF).
- Run the blower on medium-high for 5–10 minutes.
- Switch to A/C for a couple minutes, then back to fresh air.
✅ After Repair
- Verify airflow is strong at the vents and there are no unusual noises.
- If you installed a filter, re-check the door is fully seated and not leaking air around the edges.
- If odors remain, the evaporator may need a deeper clean.
