🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Drain coolant and prepare the work area
- Place a drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the radiator drain.
- Open the drain and remove the reservoir cap; use pliers if needed on the drain hose clamp.
Step 2: Remove the intake ducting and upper access items
- Loosen clamps with a flathead screwdriver and remove the intake duct.
- Disconnect any sensors by hand; use a pick tool only if a lock tab is stuck.
Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt
- Rotate the tensioner with a serpentine belt tool (15mm) and slip the belt off.
- Draw a belt routing sketch first.
Step 4: Support the engine and remove the passenger-side engine mount
- Install an engine support bar (specialty) across the strut towers and tension it to carry engine weight.
- Remove mount and bracket fasteners using socket set (13mm-18mm) and E-Torx sockets as equipped.
- Torque to OEM specification during reassembly (mount fasteners vary by design).
Step 5: Remove the crankshaft balancer (harmonic balancer)
- Remove the crank bolt using a 1/2" drive breaker bar and correct socket.
- Use a harmonic balancer puller kit (specialty) to pull the balancer straight off.
- Install a new crank bolt at reassembly and use a torque angle gauge (specialty).
- Torque to OEM specification (this bolt is torque-to-yield and is critical).
Step 6: Remove the valve cover
- Unplug coils and remove them with a 10mm socket.
- Remove valve cover bolts using a socket set and lift the cover off.
- Clean sealing surfaces with a gasket scraper and brake cleaner.
- Torque to OEM specification on reassembly (small bolts strip easily).
Step 7: Set cylinder #1 to Top Dead Center (TDC)
- Rotate the engine clockwise using a socket on the crank hub.
- Stop when the cam timing marks align per the chain kit instructions and the crank mark aligns with the front cover reference.
- Mark the relationship with a paint marker for a double-check.
Step 8: Remove the front cover
- Remove front cover fasteners using socket set and E-Torx sockets.
- Gently separate the cover; use a plastic trim tool if needed—avoid gouging aluminum.
- Remove and replace the front crankshaft seal (tap in square during reassembly).
Step 9: Remove timing components
- Relieve/remove the chain tensioner using the correct socket.
- Remove timing guides with a ratchet and correct socket.
- Remove the primary timing chain and, if replacing, the balance shaft chain per kit instructions.
- Keep bolts grouped by location.
Step 10: Install the new chains, guides, and tensioners
- Install sprockets/chains so the colored links align with the timing marks (use your kit’s diagram).
- Install new guides and tensioners using a torque wrench.
- Torque to OEM specification for cam phasers, guide bolts, and tensioner bolts (values vary by fastener).
- If your tensioner uses a retaining pin, pull the pin only after everything is aligned.
Step 11: Verify timing by hand-rotating the engine
- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise two full revolutions using a ratchet and socket.
- Re-check that timing marks return to the correct positions.
- If marks do not align, stop and correct before reassembly.
Step 12: Reinstall the front cover and valve cover
- Apply RTV silicone gasket maker only where required (typically at cover-to-head seams); spread with the applicator tip.
- Install the front cover and tighten bolts in an even pattern using a torque wrench.
- Torque to OEM specification for front cover bolts (mix of lengths is common).
- Install the valve cover with a new gasket; Torque to OEM specification.
Step 13: Reinstall the crank balancer, engine mount, belt, and remaining parts
- Press/install the balancer squarely; do not hammer it. Use the proper installer tool if required.
- Install a new crank bolt and tighten using a torque wrench and torque angle gauge (specialty).
- Torque to OEM specification (critical torque-to-yield fastener).
- Reinstall the engine mount, then remove the engine support bar (specialty).
- Reinstall the serpentine belt using the serpentine belt tool (15mm).
- Reinstall splash shield and wheel; tighten lug nuts with a torque wrench.
- Torque to OEM specification for wheel lug nuts.
Step 14: Refill fluids and change the oil
- Refill cooling system with Dex-Cool coolant (50/50).
- Change oil and filter (coolant/oil contamination can happen during this job).
