🔧 Tundra - Timing Belt Replacement

Your Tundra’s 5.7L V8 does not use a timing belt. It uses a timing chain, which is lubricated by engine oil and typically does not have a routine replacement interval like a belt.

If you’re chasing a noise, check-engine light, or oil leak, the usual “timing belt job” equivalent is a timing chain/tensioner/guide service (advanced) or an inspection.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 10-16 hours

Assumption: Stock 5.7L timing chain setup (no prior modifications).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on a cold engine; hot coolant and metal can burn you.
  • 🛑 Support the truck with jack stands on solid ground; never rely on a jack.
  • 🛑 Disconnect the negative battery terminal before cranking/cover removal.
  • 🛑 Keep hands clear of the fan area; remove the fan assembly before major front-engine work.
  • 🛑 If you rotate the engine, rotate clockwise only using the crank bolt.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 8 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1
  • Fresh hose clamps - Qty: 2-6

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Raise the front and support with jack stands under the frame.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Place a drain pan under the radiator area for coolant draining.
  • Take photos before removing hoses and connectors.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove lower covers and drain coolant

  • Use a metric socket set to remove the front skid plate/splash shields.
  • Place a drain pan under the radiator.
  • Use pliers or hose clamp pliers to remove the lower radiator hose and drain coolant.

Step 2: Remove intake ducting and fan/shroud

  • Use a flathead screwdriver and 8mm-10mm sockets to remove the intake tube and air ducting.
  • Remove the upper fan shroud fasteners with a 10mm socket.
  • Remove the mechanical fan and clutch using a fan clutch wrench set (specialty). Fan clutch wrench = thin wrench to fit tight nuts.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt and front accessories

  • Use a serpentine belt tool 14mm to rotate the tensioner and remove the belt.
  • Use a metric socket set and extensions to remove accessory brackets/components blocking the timing cover.
  • Label connectors with a paint marker as you unplug them.

Step 4: Remove the crank pulley (harmonic balancer)

  • Use a crank pulley holding tool (specialty) and a 1/2" drive breaker bar to loosen the crank bolt.
  • Remove the pulley using a harmonic balancer puller kit (specialty). Puller = tool that presses the pulley off safely.
  • Do not pry on the timing cover sealing surfaces with a screwdriver.

Step 5: Remove the timing cover

  • Use a metric socket set with extensions to remove all timing cover bolts (note different lengths).
  • Break the seal carefully and remove the cover.
  • Clean old sealant using a plastic razor scraper, then wipe with brake cleaner spray and shop towels.
  • Torque to factory spec (refer to Toyota service information) when reinstalling cover bolts.

Step 6: Set engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) and mark timing

  • Use a socket set and breaker bar on the crank bolt to rotate the engine clockwise to TDC.
  • Verify timing marks align on the crank and cam sprockets before removing the chain.
  • Add your own reference marks with a paint marker for extra safety.

Step 7: Remove chain tensioner, guides, and timing chain

  • Remove the timing chain tensioner bolts using a metric socket set.
  • Remove the chain guides using a metric socket set.
  • Carefully lift the chain off the sprockets.
  • Keep bolts grouped by location.

Step 8: Install new timing chain, guides, and tensioner

  • Install the new chain, aligning colored links/marks to the sprocket timing marks (as supplied by the chain kit).
  • Install new guides using a metric socket set.
  • Install the new tensioner using a metric socket set, then release/activate it per the tensioner’s pin/lock design.
  • Torque to factory spec (refer to Toyota service information) for guides and tensioner fasteners.

Step 9: Replace the front crank seal and reseal the timing cover

  • Remove the old front crank seal with pliers carefully, avoiding scratches.
  • Press in the new seal evenly (use a suitable large socket from your metric socket set as a driver).
  • Apply a continuous bead of timing cover sealant (Toyota FIPG equivalent RTV) to the timing cover per the sealant instructions.
  • Reinstall the timing cover and hand-start all bolts, then tighten evenly with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to factory spec (refer to Toyota service information).

Step 10: Reinstall crank pulley, accessories, belt, fan, and shroud

  • Reinstall the crank pulley and crank bolt using a crank pulley holding tool (specialty) and torque wrench.
  • Torque to factory spec (refer to Toyota service information) for the crank bolt (this is a critical fastener).
  • Reinstall accessory brackets/components using a metric socket set and tighten with a torque wrench.
  • Install the serpentine belt using a serpentine belt tool 14mm.
  • Reinstall the fan/clutch and shroud using the fan clutch wrench set (specialty) and a 10mm socket.

Step 11: Refill fluids and reassemble remaining covers

  • Reconnect hoses using hose clamp pliers.
  • Refill coolant using a funnel with engine coolant.
  • Change engine oil and filter (coolant/oil contamination risk during this job).
  • Reinstall skid plates/splash shields using a metric socket set.
  • Reconnect the battery using a 10mm socket.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle; listen for abnormal rattles at the timing cover area.
  • Check for oil leaks at the timing cover and front crank seal area.
  • Bring the engine to operating temperature and verify heater output (helps confirm coolant circulation).
  • After a short test drive, re-check coolant level and inspect again for leaks.
  • Any loud rattle: shut off immediately.
