š§ Frontier - Timing Chain Replacement (No Timing Belt)
Your Frontierās 4.0L V6 uses a timing chain, not a timing beltāso thereās no belt to replace. If youāre chasing rattling on cold start, a check engine light for cam/crank timing, or high mileage wear, the correct repair is servicing the timing chains, guides, and tensioners.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 8-12 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Work on a cold engine; hot coolant can burn you.
- ā ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
- ā ļø Support the truck with jack stands; never rely on a jack.
- ā ļø Youāll remove engine mounts/accessories; support the engine from below.
- ā ļø Keep fingers clear when releasing belt tensioners and pry points.

š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Raise the front and support it on jack stands at the frame.
- Place a drain pan under the radiator and drain the coolant.
- Take photos as you go. It helps a lot on reassembly.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove skid plates and splash shields
- Use a 12mm socket and trim clip removal tool to remove the undercovers.
- Set hardware in labeled containers (front, mid, rear).
Step 2: Drain coolant
- Place a drain pan under the radiator drain.
- Open the drain and remove the radiator cap to speed draining.
Step 3: Remove the intake ducting for access
- Use an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver to loosen hose clamps.
- Disconnect ducting and move it aside.
Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt
- Use a serpentine belt tool 14mm to rotate the belt tensioner and slip the belt off.
- Serpentine tensioner = spring-loaded pulley arm.
Step 5: Remove the fan, shroud, and radiator (clear working room)
- Use a 10mm socket and pliers to remove the fan shroud fasteners and hose clamps.
- Disconnect upper/lower radiator hoses with pliers.
- Remove radiator mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and lift the radiator out carefully.
Step 6: Remove accessory components from the front of the engine
- Remove brackets and accessories blocking the timing cover using a 12mm socket and 14mm socket.
- If any wiring clips attach to the cover, release them using a trim clip removal tool.
Step 7: Support the engine (if mount/bracket removal is needed)
- Place a floor jack under the oil pan with a flat pad and lift lightly to support engine weight.
- Do not crush the oil pan. Lift only until it just supports.
Step 8: Remove the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer)
- Hold the crank pulley using a crank pulley holding tool (specialty).
- Remove the crank bolt using a 1/2" breaker bar and 22mm socket.
- Use a harmonic balancer puller kit (specialty) to pull the pulley straight off.
- On install: Torque the crank bolt to 236 Nm (174 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Remove valve covers (for timing alignment access)
- Remove ignition coils using a 10mm socket, then unplug connectors by hand.
- Remove valve cover bolts using a 10mm socket and lift covers off.
- Clean sealing surfaces with a plastic gasket scraper.
Step 10: Set cylinder #1 to TDC on compression
- Rotate the engine clockwise using a 22mm socket on the crank bolt (temporarily reinstall if needed).
- Align the timing marks per the chain kit instructions and mark them with a paint marker.
- TDC = piston at the top of its stroke.
Step 11: Remove the front timing cover
- Remove timing cover bolts using a 10mm socket and 12mm socket.
- Carefully break the RTV seal using a flathead screwdriver at approved pry points only.
- Clean old RTV using a razor scraper and brake cleaner.
Step 12: Remove timing chains, guides, and tensioners
- Relieve tensioner pressure and remove tensioners using a 10mm socket.
- Remove chain guides using a 10mm socket.
- Remove chains, keeping track of left/right orientation.
Step 13: Install new chains, guides, and tensioners
- Install new guides using a 10mm socket.
- Install new chains, matching colored links to the timing marks.
- Install new tensioners using a 10mm socket, then release the locking pins to apply tension.
- Double-check marks before releasing tensioners.
Step 14: Replace the front crank seal
- Pry out the old seal carefully using a flathead screwdriver.
- Press in the new seal evenly by hand, then seat it using a suitable driver from the harmonic balancer puller kit (specialty).
Step 15: Reinstall timing cover with RTV
- Apply a continuous bead of RTV sealant (engine timing cover rated) to the cover per the sealant pattern on the gasket kit.
- Install the cover and snug bolts evenly using a 10mm socket.
- Final tightening: use a 3/8" torque wrench and tighten fasteners to OEM spec (varies by bolt location/length).
Step 16: Reinstall crank pulley and accessories
- Install the crank pulley, hold it with the crank pulley holding tool (specialty), and torque the crank bolt with a 1/2" torque wrench.
- Torque the crank bolt to 236 Nm (174 ft-lbs).
- Reinstall accessories and brackets using 12mm socket and 14mm socket, tightening to OEM spec.
Step 17: Reinstall valve covers and ignition coils
- Install valve covers and tighten bolts evenly using a 10mm socket (final tighten with a 3/8" torque wrench to OEM spec).
- Reinstall coils using a 10mm socket and reconnect connectors by hand until they click.
Step 18: Reinstall radiator, hoses, fan/shroud, and belt
- Install radiator using a 10mm socket and reconnect hoses using pliers.
- Install the serpentine belt using a serpentine belt tool 14mm.
Step 19: Refill fluids (oil and coolant)
- Change the oil and filter using a drain pan and metric socket set.
- Refill engine with engine oil (5W-30) using a funnel.
- Refill coolant with Nissan-approved long-life coolant using a funnel.
Step 20: Reinstall undercovers and torque wheels (if removed)
- Reinstall skid plates using a 12mm socket.
- If wheels were removed: Torque lug nuts to 133 Nm (98 ft-lbs) using a 1/2" torque wrench.
ā After Repair
- Reconnect the battery using a 10mm socket.
- Start the engine and let it idle; listen for abnormal rattles at the front cover.
- Check for oil or coolant leaks around the timing cover and radiator hoses.
- Top off coolant after the engine warms up and the heater blows hot.
- After the first drive, recheck coolant level and look underneath for drips.
